Question about nVidia SLi experience

Hi,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my graphic card, and having seen the benchmarks, I've been thinking about the idea of getting 2 GTX 1070 in SLi configuration.

I want to have a little more performance than what a single GTX 1080 can offer, but 2x GTX 1080 is out of the question due to budget reasons. However, I saw Guru3D's benchmark for 2x GTX 1070 and the performance seems to fit what I would love to have, and I am willing to spend on 2 of these cards, IF it is worth it.

So this is where I would like to hear you guys opinion on SLi. The last experience I had with multi GPU was way back with the GTX 295. I understand that support depends on software and driver, and my question is has such support gotten significantly better since then? Can I expect to see such support for all mainstream or AAA games?

BTW, on the technical side of things, my 5820K CPU only have 28 lanes (not enough for 16 x2 PCIE), and so I'm guessing it's going to be 8x PCIE if I run 2 cards. Will this impact performance?

Thank you for any inputs thumb.gif

SLI performance is quite a bit better now than it was in the 2xx series. There's a new bridge for the 1070/80 that does better at higher resolutions. I've been using an sli setup for the last five years and have major issues with it. Pretty much every AAA game supports multi gpu. There may not be an sli profile upon release for some games but that's usually addressed rather quickly.
