My new GTX 1070 sounds like electric turbine

So I bought shinny new GeForce GTX 1070 G1 from Gigabyte. According to reviews the card is from silent to a bit audible under longer load. That's and understatement of the year. I knew Gigabyte's cards aren't exactly the pinnacle of silence, but what my card manages to put out is an overkill:A 480€ card inside Fractal Design Define R5 silent case and I can hear it from the other side of the room. This is not what I paid for, I didn't want to buy a mosquito killing machine. A deep humming sound coming from fans is OK. Buzzing coil is manageable. But high pitch noise that's forcing my brain to escape through my nose is as far from acceptable as it can gets.

Is there any way how to deal with this? If I'd want to lower fans' speed, which temperature is safe in the long run?

Does the noise change tone with different fan speeds?

Yes. I know it's coming from fans. I just don't know why.

Hey.

Do you happen to have any temperature monitoring programs? Also, what software have you ran which lead to the card becoming so loud? It probably doens't matter much, I'm just curious as to what made the fans run so fast.

You'll definitely want to check your GPU temperature, it could be getting pretty warm, or the default fan speed could also be running really high, a custom fan curve in a program like MSI Afterburner should sort this out for you.

For safe max temperatures you don't really want to exceed 80c, the cooling system on this GPU should be able to keep the GPU cool enough not to exceed 80c and also remain fairly quiet.

Some software recommendations:

MSI Afterburner - GURU3D
GPU-Z - TechPowerUp

GPU-Z can be useful to see the max temp among other things, you can use MSI Afterburner to set a custom fan curve and you can also overclock with it.

I'm using HWinfo64 for monitoring and app from Gigabyte for overclocking, since it can set silent fans profile. Temps are fine. If I use auto fan speed it's around 62 degrees. If I use silent then around 70. Changing fan speed pretty much only changes pitch. I'd have to go pretty low to actually make it silent again. I also tried adding bottom fan into case, but ironically that made it even worse.

Fans sound defective.

I'd RMA it for that.

Yeah defective fan, I would get a replacement. You should be able to go to the retailer, if out of stock just get your money back. If it fails completely in the future you will be given a refurbished one.

If only it was that easy. Last time I did RMA my new PSU because of coil whine. After month they returned it with message "issue was not found, everything is OK". Seasonic rep had to step in and help me. In fact in was on this very forum. smile.gif Do I really need to wait a month for a card I just bought? And what if they refuse to accept my complaint? What then? Will Gigabyte rep step in and help me? I doubt it. Besides, I was in contact with shop's product manager if I can return it. His response? "The reasons don't suggest that card is defective".

Since you just got it try your retailer first.

But busted fans are like the #1 reason for GPU RMAs.

Thanks guys. I opened ticket on Gigabyte's support site in case reseller will again refuse to accept my warranty claim. Is there any GB's rep wandering this forums by any chance?

Side question: do you think they might settle after some days of usage? Or am I just wishfully thinking?
