Don't forget the hackers. When all cars have an auto pilot mode, you can be sure there will be many cheaters trying to make their cars faster than they should be.

Hacking a car is going to be a lot harder than, say, just pushing down on the right foot slightly.

Depending on which set of data you look at, a person is killed about every 15 minutes in an auto related accident. Human error being the cause in 90% to 99% of those accidents, again depending on what set of data you are looking at.

This is very fringe right now, and probably will stay that way. If 'hacking' was reason to not use any computer systems or automation we wouldn't be using those very things to sustain life on this planet as it is. So while we have to be aware and watch, protecting as best as possible against hacking, we also don't allow it to dictate adoption of better technology as a whole.

I sure hope not.

You know, thinking about it autonomous driving is the death knell of the automotive insurance industry. Currently insurance is a multi billion dollar industry and when autonomous driving vehicles reduce accidents by whatever percentage (lets say 90-99%) that is a 90-99% reduction in the insurance industry and a 90-99% reduction of the profit they make.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if we see big insurance pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into lobbying against autonomous driving, along with buying politicians to insure there are endless and unpassable regulatory hurdles and putting out endless scaremongering "news" articles about the dangers associated with it, overblowing every little mishap along the way.

Well this was inevitable, new technology will always have risks and painful stepping stones. A lot of people died during the early years of aeroplanes mellowsmiley.gif

I'm actually more amazed it took so long for a fatal crash to finally happen - it sounds like an extremely safe system so far, which will only get better!

Accidents and other damage would still happen. Like wildlife. My dads truck was hit three seperate times by deer, in the side. No automated system will stop a deer from slamming into the side of your car. Or if one runs in front you can still hit it. Usually when they get hit its because they ran out at the last second. The car can not physically stop that quick. Plus weather tears up cars. Bad storms, rock slides, and so on. Lack of accidents would actually mean more money in the insurance companies pockets. No reason to get out. And since we are forced to have it by law, it is very unlikely to change for a very long time.
