This concept is exactly the point. When it comes to endangering lives, we put up with what is necessary to fill a role in our lives. Driving's purpose is to get us from point A to point B and allow us to function in society. If AI or later teleportation or anything else that is safer than manual driving comes along and is proven, the latter will be phased out.

It is the same thing with guns. If they invented a weapon that could literally do everything a gun could do, except all it did was render you unconcious instantly, I could see them making guns illegal. No weapon in the world today tops a gun for self defense, so they are necessary. If something like that was invented, I could see guns being illegal to own and only to be used on a gun range for recreational purpose.

Unfortunately I am sure that PETA would never allow the "render you unconscious" gun to exist. Can you imagine all those poor ducks drowning in the lake after the hunter renders them unconscious? biggrin.gif

The NHTSA and NTSB are now involved, and are seeking additional data from Tesla on the crash.

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/feds-seek-autopilot-data-tesla-crash-probe-40515954

"NHTSA said Tesla must comply with its request by Aug. 26 or face penalties of up to $21,000 per day, to a maximum of $105 million."

Not surprising considering the loss of life. They're going to want to get to the bottom of why the system failed so they can prevent other incidents considering how AI cars are getting more and more prevalent on public roadways. No matter how you come down on the issue of AI cars there is no question that anybody losing their life in a totally preventable crash due to a new and immature technology is a tragedy. I really wonder if these systems aren't being thrown out onto public roads too soon?

In Tesla's own words it's only in BETA.

Kinda scary to have "beta" software out on public roads where people can get hurt or die. These systems still require a vigilant driver to ensure if something goes wrong they can correct it...

People can get hurt or die on public roads with or without beta software regardless.

One more accident: http://www.techspot.com/news/65537-tesla-autopilot-feature-involved-another-accident-time-montana.html

My take on this matter is very simple: Tesla should be barred from including this feature on their cars and should be criminally prosecuted for doing so up to now and be held responsible for the accidents that happen.

You don't use the human lives of your clients to beta test features on a car that drives in public roads. It's utterly irresponsible. The whole point of the autopilot feature is contradictory to begin with. First of all, it's not as "autopilot" as people imagine, second it says people have to keep holding the steering wheel and be ready to correct the car on the go if needed. What's the point? The driver will sit there, doing nothing for minutes or hours and is expected to be alert at all times? How is this even feasible? Is Tesla really expecting people do behave like this? And are they expecting regular people to have the cold bold of a certified driving instructor that has to correct the wrongdoings of the pupil on the go? Of course they are. On paper, at least, no matter how stupid it all sounds. Telemetry all the way (and if you read their Privacy Policy, there's lots of it). Otherwise they wouldn't have included the feature in the car if they didn't expect feedback.

There is a reason why driving instructors chose the roads carefully to avoid major accidents when teaching others how to drive. That won't happen here either. The busiest roads and intersections, rough terrain, everything. Tesla doesn't care.

This is not progress. This "beta everywhere" that people are supposed to learn to live with is humanity throwing away all the precautions and learnings that we've amassed over the centuries. Risking human lives in the stupidest manners to try to get ahead of the competition. It's reckless and it's stupid. Tesla is enabling people to engage in dangerous situations and at the same time also endangering others on the road. How did the responsible agencies ever let them put this feature on the cars is beyond me. Too much faith in something that should be about science.

How many miles have been driven with autopilot? What if it turns out to be safer then if people had been driving?

There are still going to be accidents with automated driving, there's just going to be less of them.

By the time automated driving will spill-over to the masses, we will not need to drive anymore. We will use magnets and stargates thumb.gif
