Motherboard or CPU Dead? - Page 2

They're excellent - they pay for postage both ways and all via DHL. I sent off my CPU earlier today so hopefully I get a replacement back soon enough. I assume it was the CPU so my computer will be back up and running with a replacement CPU. If it was actually the motherboard, then I'll RMA that after I test with the new CPU.

The system worked fine for over a year using it daily for gaming and misc tasks. I really had no problems for a good while, other than strange boot issues every now and then.

I think the ASUS mb overvolted the cpu on boot. It seems to be a bug with the bios when I checked their forums.

I ended up RMA both the mb and the cpu. ASUS took a while and only sent me the same board back with an updated bios. Intel was quick and sent a replacement 5820K overnight.

I'm currently looking to replace the mb now with another brand.

Btw... Be aware that if the mb is taking out the cpu, it could do it again with the replacement you receive.

Sweet! biggrin.gif

I had the same thing happen to me; I panicked and RMA'd both the CPU & motherboard. Intel sent a new CPU (under that overclocking warranty), but Gigabyte said the motherboard was fine. Turns out CPUs can just randomly die.

That is really weird, glad your RMA went okay! It really doesn't inspire confidence that a CPU can just not work one day after a year and a half...

Yeah, true, but it's good that it was the CPU because Intel are REALLY fast with RMAs.

This one's a better overclocker. I reached 4.25GHz on 1.2V and it looked like it was happy to take more. Unfortunately when I set the multiplier to 34 or higher with base clock at 125MHz, it starts to only detect 8GB RAM instead of the 16GB I have installed. I'm running the XMP-3000MHz profile for my RAM though, so that may be it. I left it at a multiplier of 33 for 4.125GHz and that's it. Seems to work with 1.18V.

They are! I sent mine in and the new one came in the next week. They had an advanced RMA option, but I was cheap, haha.

Agreed! Intel RMAs are actually kind of nice: they don't you just back refurbished trash CPUs. I bought my CPU in September 2013; I RMA'd June 2016. The new CPU? Built in August 2015. I got a 2 years newer CPU!

Weird...maybe reseat the RAM if you want to OC.
