Windows 7 came out in 2009, the first DX11 games I know of came out in 2010. But we didn't see full DX11 usage until 2013, and it didn't become commonplace until 2014.

- EDIT: Holy hell, fixed some crucial typos.

well amd's "dx11" hardware since the 7000 series supports dx12 and vulkan. nvidia 600 series and above does as well. nearly half a decade worth of hardware supports both dx12 and vulkan. that's a lot and covers majority of gamers.

and that's why i support vulkan more than dx12 because vulkan works on 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. this is why we need more developers to back vulkan over dx12. id going vulkan with id tech 6 and valve fully supporting vulkan (dota 2 already has a vulkan client out) is a step in the right direction.

Yeah I'm sure console hardware isn't an issue, but rather software which we know is a problem on PC since it requires Windows 10. All the more reason to back Vulkan like you say, but I can't see anything other than Microsoft's API being mainstream.

well back during the early days opengl was more widespread than directx. it was more advanced, had more features, and was always ahead. not to dwell to much into the history of opengl, if opengl didn't commit suicide and companies like nvidia didn't release proprietary api extensions like shaders to it, opengl would of kept its lead and adoption.

vulkan has fixed virtually all the complaints opengl had and contains pretty much everything dx12 has to offer and more. as long as khronos group doesn't stab itself in the foot, and continues to persuade developers plus demand from us users, vulkan can take off.

if you look at how soon valve and id pushed out vulkan ports, khronos has to be doing something right. it was mere months since the release of vulkan ports got shipped out by the two. and valve and id started off with unfinished documents.

Microsoft helped a lot with this suicide back then with vista. They said to everyone that opengl is dead and direct10 is the best API to pick for your engine. And the classic we care about pc gaming.

And we know the rest of the story...

here's a good read on the opengl vs direct x if you want to know more about the downfall of opengl. it really was opengl themselves. they actually had a great opportunity during dx10 / vista days and failed miserably on their own.

What is this gaming that you speak of? headscratch.gif

Do you mean the vitriolic arguments about why certain applications for leisurely purposes run or don't run the way they should on particular hardware?
