And while I don't know exactly which process they are using for the RX 480, Samsung has updated their 14nm process to reduce voltages and improve power consumption since last year. That will at least mean faster smartphone chips coming out this year, but I don't know if it benefits AMD.

Yeah they are a little different but it's not much.



GF is using Samsung process and what ever advancement one or the other does they both use it, they have that kind of licensing, GF simply licensed the 14nm from Samsung and share the same know-how. GF had their own process but it was poor if I remember right so instead they licensed it from Samsung.

If they have control of the card via drivers they can turn off 1 or 2 phases that are connecting the GPU power to PCIE.

Given how well and widely the 480 seems to underclock, it seems that AMD raised voltage a bit in their binning process to increase yields and/or increase performance to match expectations. Would seem to answer why the 480 only seemed to approximately match a GTX 900-line card in terms of power efficiency.

That is most likely it. Also they wanted to split the load equality from PEG and PCIE for OEM reason. These days AMD reference cards are really a band choice to buy.

Well the 480's are showing they can be undervolted and it's actually increasing performance (what the? lol) They could be an attractive proposition for many buyers (I'm sure the PCIE issue is overblown and/or can be fixed)

But yes I changed what you said exactly for the founder's edition pricing reason. Seems to be some major cons on both team's reference cards at the moment.
