HTPC + NAS

Thread Starter
What do you think about combining these two systems? I suspect each can be small enough to use a mid-tower case. The primary difficulty for me is I am really impressed by low TDP. For this reason, I like the AM1 systems. They are reported to be sufficient for streaming purposes yet, I would probably prefer stand alone graphics. To be honest, AMD or Intel makes no difference to me in this regard. FreeNAS has almost no hardware requirments so, this helps my case for low TDP yet, I may use a Linux distribution too. It is difficult to sort the issues at this stage. Has anyone proceeded me in this idea?

Here is what I think I would like in the combined system:

1 - Keep TDP low

2 - Does this enable use of a fanless PSU? Something to consider.

3 - Mid-Tower case for ITX or mATX only; nothing larger. I may overlook dedicated ITX cases because, the premium for small loses my interest. I suppose a used ITX in great condition may help keep cost low.

4 - Keep cost low; preferably <$500. I may start with one large HDD/SDD an use several partitions for the NAS rather than multiple HDD/SDD.

5- Hardware can be dated, just not too old.

Let me know what you think.

If you are looking at running both systems in a single case then I assume you would be running FreeNAS as a VM?

Depending on your overall power requirements, end location of the system, etc. a PSU with a hybrid design might be something to look at. I personally have been using a Corsair AX860 which will run fanless upto a certain load.
