[Build Log] My recent 9590 build, just for fun! - Page 2

Yeah, I'm pretty aware of the consumption and heat output of the chip, but that is part of the fun.

For now I only have 4 cores active, but I expect to be able to have at least 6 active, but my high ambient temps are going to make it even more difficult, about 28C at night, and around 32C during the day.

Now, a funny thing always happen to me, each time I build another computer the old one dies in less than a week.

Just today in the morning my old Phenom II X4 980 just stoped working, at all, the PC was idle, I thought it was a crash due to the undervolt, but I found it strange because that was something that has never happened since the last settings I applied about a year ago.

The CPU normally sits idle at 800MHz@0.835 volts, but it has been overclocked since I bought it around 5 years ago.

I can't for sure confirm its dead, but if it is this would be the first CPU that dies on me.

Aside from that the issue right now with my FX is that since the 460se seems to be giving me issues, I tried to use a 970, but when installed the pc refuseseven recognize the CPU for some reason, the board gives me CPU error, however with the 460se its able to post but I get video artifacts all around.

Could these issues be caused by a bad PSU?

Could be a bad PSU, and it could also be a video card or motherboard failure. I doubt you killed an X4 980, especially if you let it go into low-power states when idle. It should last basically forever if you use it that way.

Try replacing the PSU first. If that doesn't work, check the motherboard for leaking and/or bulging capacitors. A lot of AM3 boards are coming to the end of their life expectancy about now. I replaced one for a friend a year and a half ago.

If the motherboard checks out OK visually (it could still be bad, but 90 percent of failures are easy to spot), try a different GPU. And if all that doesn't get it going again, then pull the X4 980 and try it in your Sabertooth 990FX and see if it runs OK.

In my FX build, the issue seems to have been the PSU, It most likely has some bad caps or things like that, I'm going to attempt to repair it.

But I'm still not sure about the issue with my Phenom II 980, I have still need to do the tests, but I got distracted benchmarking the FX, however I have ended quite dissapointed.

The scaling with this CPU seems to be quite bad, the more cores the slower the performance, most likely due to a bottleneck in the communication with the GPU.

Any recommendations?

Try some games instead. 3D Mark is fun to play around with but, it is not an accurate representation and besides, something is off with that score anyways since the FX 9590 should definitely be higher. (Physics score alone shows that.)

I've got small improvements of 50 points for every 200MHz overcloking Northbridge but I haven't been able to get it stable past the 2400, which is what I have used in the screenshot, for some reason voltage is not helping at all, but I got around the same with Hyper Transpot Overclocking, but from 2400 to 2600 no noticeable improvement has been seen.

However, in SkyDiver benchmark the 4 cores FX looks clearly superior than the 980 except for physics, I've still need to test with 6 an 8 cores active.

About games results are quite mixed, right now the FX has only 4GB 1600 cl7 ram being at a clear disadvanage compared to the 16GB 2000 cl10 that the 980 has, I will try to overclock the memory if that helps or better just switch the sticks.

Ignore it. Basically they found a way to gimp the FX 8 cores in that benchmark to the point that it wouldn't score better than similarly priced i 5's.

So I've tried to overclock this chip by P-states, but I get some weird glitches immediately after I apply a CPU clock over 4.7, and haven't been able to get it stable even at 4.8, so I decided it wasn't worth it for the moment, and tried other things, like memory overclock.

Now I see why all my previous attempts to overclock these mushkin sticks have been so disappointing, these are quite picky with their settings, with stock voltage, 1.5v, and manually applying the same ratio of their original XMP profile, but at a higher frequency and they would work perfect, nothing less nothing more, I got to 2133 10-11-10-32 6-42-14-7, and wasn't able to get 2400 because the windows would become crazy when booting up, and voltage didn't help at all.

In the end I got very small improvements in the benchmarks, not noticeable though, but after that I left all 8 cores active, the CPU runs quite cool, thanks to the huge airflow of my case, and the undervolting, right now I have it with only 3 P-states, 1.4GHz@0.812v; 4.7GHz@1.38v; Turbo:5GHz@1.5.

During normal use and benchmarks the temperatures never exceed 58C, however the average temps are around 42C, I still need to do some CPU intensive games, but I'm pretty sure that the cooler would not keep it under control with prime 95. Only 4 cores undervolted would reach 62C and the socket 58C after 20 minutes in Large-FTP, six cores hit 65C and 60C accordingly, but I haven't tried with 8 cores, I don't think it would be worth it, but I would be happy if it stands The Division without exceeding 65C.

These are my last results in the Sky Diver Benchmark.

As you can see in this benchmark things look much better for this CPU.

I have seen some of the strangest results I've had in a benchmark,

3DMark Firestrike Benchmark is just way too bogus with the FX CPUs, that it makes no sense.

After overclocking yesterday, I benched the system with 8 cores to see if there was any improvement, and I found very small improvements only, most likely not even worth it.

Today I just used 3DMark while I was monitoring temps with AI Suite Sensor recorder, transferring large amounts of data in the background through the network, and a few other things, to simulate a multi tasking situation, mostly to check for the temp behavior.

After the benchmark I was going to look to the sensors, and the score I saw on screen was 400 to 500 points larger than yesterdays best attempt, I was like "this should be impossible",
So just to test out if the results could improve I stopped some of the background tasks, and the results were quite strange again, a lower score.

What is happening here?

Seems that the CPU improves its performance in this particular test because under load?

After some more test this seems to be the case

In this image you will find that in all test the CPU has 8 cores active, Left: 3dmark Firestrike test just after starting up, Right mild background task, and the results on the center are from heavy multitask.

Could this be caused by Turbo core?
Or this is just a coincidence.

EDIT: Im thinking that it could be fault of a bad Cool and quiet implementation like it happened with the Phenom II. Since I cant fine tune CnQ as detailed as in that one or use a software based solution it could be the case. Whenever I left the stock cnq working any benchmark sxore would be noticeably worst due to slow CnQ response and induced latency.

Interesting findings! thumb.gif

Yes Firestrike does not load the cpu at all. Here is my loads in it, and yes the score was pathetic.

Could you do me a favor? Download the ICC Patcher and run it on Firestrike, and then retest. I use the ICC Patcher on all new programs I get and usually it makes a large difference and sometimes hardly any difference at all. In years of use it has not damaged anything. Here is what it does to Handbrake for example.

Will do, sounds very interesting, and seems to improve quite a lot.

It would be interesting which applications can benefit from this.

Aside from that I will change to the ram stick that the Phenom II had, to see if I can get up to 2400 with those.

EDIT: Tried it bu it didn't find anything, maybe because Firestrike is coded in Java, also I cant seem to find the specific exe for the benchmark, I only have found the launcher but, that doesn't seem to be the process that its benchmarking.

From the softwares I have only Cinebench 11.5 could be patched, gaining a small percentage over the unpatched attempt.

Also I was able to try the 16GB 2400 cl11 sticks, they are able to get into windows but even with loose timings and high memory voltage (1.7v) arent able to stabilize in Prime95.

In the end I had to leave them at 2133 10-11-11-30 6-44-14-7 but ended with slightly lower performance than the previous ones, but I still need to thigten those timings
