While it'd be nice, 4K @60 is never mentioned. Sony said a similar bench (1080p/60) and they we're grilled for it. I'm sure MS is striving for 60fps, but they've never claimed it (a smart move imo). Scorpio will be the poor mans 4k gaming, while the PCMR gets the holy Titan P.

but since current consoles do 1080p@30 then its likely prudent to expect 4K@30 from Scorpio

Where did they say anything about gaming in 4K? They'll support 4K video @ 60 Hz.. so movies. At most they'll upscale so you can use your 4K TV (since they'll have the proper version of HDMI to support it).

edit: ah, never mind.. they actually claim 4K gaming.. utter bull.

hz is the refresh rate of your display. How often it refreshes during a second.

fps is the number of frames your GPU does render per second.

For example. I can have a 120hz monitor and still only play at 30fps.

noob question..

why would an ultra powerful gpu bottleneck cpus at lower resolutions (1080p, etc)?

like a) why does the gpu get bottlenecked by a cpu in the first place and b) why does that effect get stronger with lower resolutions?


i ask cause plan to buy a pascal titan and game at 1920x1200p.

Because of CPU overhead needed to prepare the frame for the GPU.. and DX 11 (and under) are mostly single threaded, or reliant on single threaded CPU performance. Overhead stays the same as the resolution drops, but the GPU can handle the smaller frames faster. Eventually you choke the GPU as the CPU can't handle the work needed for that quantity of frames. (You get 1 core at 100% CPU in your game). More or less, quick and dirty answer.

DX12 / Vulkan should change that.

There is literally no reason for you to buy the Titan if you're going to just play games at that resolution. Hell, even a 1060 would be more than enough.

CPU have to render stuff like physics. For example download 3Dmark and watch the benchmark. There you can see tests where only the CPU renders stuff. Like falling towers for example. CPU also handle other stuff that is not (really) related to resolution.

When resolutions goes up the GPU is stressed more, but the CPU basically the same. That is why many CPU bottlenecking tests, do test the CPU at a very low resolution. 720p or lower.

When you game at those resolutions with a super powerful GPU there is a chance the GPU is able to render more frames than the CPU -> CPU bottleneck.

At higher resolutions. E.G. 4K the GPU is stressed much more (circa 3-4 times as much very roughly~) and the chance of CPU bottleneck decreases.

Also CPU have PCIE lanes. for example a QUAD SLI 980 Ti setup wouldn't fare well with an i3 CPU. You'd need an extreme CPU to fully make use of SLI then.

It's a little bit more complicated, but that it basically it smile.gif

I asked why they mentioned Hz when talking about 4K res and the specs/power of their new machine

seemed to me like he was using Hz/fps interchangeably and implying/hoping for 4K@60

but we'll see
