If AMD has the same funding that could take them to MARS, do you think they will perform so badly?

You don't know anything about GCN if you think throwing money and engineers at it will make it as fast as Pascal.

It's a different architecture with different strengths, and different limitations.

AMD have a great GPU architecture, and games are swinging toward utilising it, Nvidia also have a great architecture though and they are winning at the moment.

Plus let's look at it this way...............put TONNES of funding in maybe gain 10% performance to your flagship, marketshare might gain 10%. Then what, you've spent TONNES of money and now the people that took it over are in major debt.

Same downward spiral.

No it wasn't. AMD had to relaunch the 7970 as the GHz edition and tweak the drivers for over a year. I own a 7970 and I saw my relative performance to the 680 only increase, and the surpass it. But at the time AMD wasn't competitive vs the 680, which is why they launched GK104 with the 680 branding instead of the 670 one. That's also when nvidia started selling mainstream products (300 mm^2) at enthusiast prices. Money money money.

This talks about the launch of the 7970 GHz edition.. to match the 680... or try to. (http://www.anandtech.com/show/6025/radeon-hd-7970-ghz-edition-review-catching-up-to-gtx-680)

The Titan launch wasn't a response to outside forces.. it was actually the lack of competition that allowed nvidia to launch GK100 as a luxury item instead of branding it a 680 GTX like they did with the 580 GTX.

This years titan launch will be similar. There is no competition (yet) but they can milk the crowd with GP102 with a new Titan card while waiting for AMD to launch Vega. Then they'll launch the 1080 TI to compete directly with Vega. Money money money, its what businesses are about.

There is a chance that any company buying AMD might choose to not bother with competing with Nvidia. On that note is the gpu division profitable?

They're the only ones able to offer custom designs offering enough CPU and GPU horsepower to dominate the console market. Why would anyone scrap an integral and profitable part of the business? AMD never really competed with nVidia on raw performance.. they always hit the sweet price / perf ratio.

Doubt it's profitable although it might be in a year or two.

I wonder why the TDP is 300-375watts when the titan x is 250. I'd imagine pascal+hbm2 would reduce it to 200watts for the titan P

You can't make a competitive GPU architecture overnight lol.

Better yet a takeover of AMD and scrap GCN to compete again, maybe in 5-10 years time when their new tech has been developed.

It's a pipe dream.

Better put your faith in all games using Async compute and the playing field being level in the next year or two. Much more likely than the takeover scenario.
Well you don't need to be a blind consumer and buy the top card when it comes out, wait six months to a year and get something more reasonable.

Nobody is making you have to buy cutting edge resolutions and tech, it's a luxury and these companies spend billions in R+D, so they gotta make big bucks to continue.

ATI was designing high end GPUs before Nvidia was even a glimmer in Jen-Hsun's eye. They just need more money. AMD was competitive in graphics for quite a while. Their CPU division has been hemorrhaging money for so long, they have no $$$ left for GPU R&D. If a big player with deep pockets bought them, they could be competitive at the high end within 2 years.

Lets see:
Nvidia out with high end, ultra high end and midrange in August.

AMD is out with midrange.

GG AMD.
Hope Zen works out better for them than this "always late to the party" strategy they have with GPUs.

I can see an announcement in August with release a few months later (Late October, Early November)

Releasing in August does seem way too soon, but you never know.

Some fresh news about a new TITAN have just popped up at VR-World.
GeForce GTX TITAN ‘P’, GTX 1080 Ti

Before we begin, few words those who are unfamiliar with VR-World website. You might remember a site called Bright Side of News (BSN). VR World is essentially BSN’s new name, you can still find all BSN articles at VR World. Theo Valich is known editor and I don’t think his latest post is just a rumor.

According to the article, VRW staff had the opportunity to hold ‘GP100/102-based GTX TITAN’ in their hands just few days ago. Although this card (TITAN) is not expected to hit the market before GP102 Quadro implementation goes official, VRW actually gave us a date, which is August 17th to 21st at Gamescom in Germany.

Bam, I called it that it would go by that name a good 6 months ago. +1 internetz to me!
