[Various] Pascal Titan could be 50% faster than the GeForce GTX 1080 - Rumoured to launch in August - Page 64

On the HMB2 topic, Was I the only one that has the opinion, that Nvidia will likely get more out of HBM2 than AMD got out of 1 gen HBM, all things being equal? We've learned obviously that Nvidia has some really good compression methods that made it easier for them to use a 384bit bus and not suffer as opposed to 512.

I have to give it to AMD for pushing the envelope being first with HBM, but unfortunately it didn't translate into the OC's Dream like marketing promised. I wish it had pushed things forward.

:o I was dreaming about having a quad GP100 Titan-P HBM2 watercooled rig with NVlink fixing all the scaling problems of the past, and curing cancer along the way. I know...you don't have to say it, "Keep right on dreaming lol" :D

Nvidia compression + Hbm2 will give result far more impressive than amd even using them hbm2. Amd need better bandwith than nvidia their compression tools are not great like nvidia, it can explain in some way the reason why 980ti was stronger than fury x. I will buy a 4 sli way titan P if it prevent and cure cancer, thats for sure !!! wink.gif

Either way, after reading through this:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/10433/nvidia-announces-pci-express-tesla-p100

Seem like the titan will definitely be a GP100 that failed Tesla requirement. And it has to come with 2 variant because the HBM failure is mutually exclusive to the Tesla requirement.

So first a GP100 is being split into 2 variant, fully enabled HBM or with some fault HBM stack, before splitting further with Tesla requirement, all using sorting methods:

1) HBM passed -> 16G P100, HBM failed ->12G P100

2) For 16G GP100:

Passed Tesla Requirement -> PCIe Tesla 16G
Failed Tesla Rquirement -> Titan 16G

For 12G GP100:

Passed Tesla Requirement -> PCIe Tesla 12G
Failed Tesla Requirement -> Titan 12G

Because HBM is partially crippled for 12G and is tied to memory bandwidth, the cut down Titan will have lesser L2 cache, slower memory bandwidth which will definitely affect OC performance, probably it will not even hit 2GHz core clock. But it comes as in the cheapest GP100 from Nvidia. $999 most likely.

For the full 16G, it comes with 4MB of L2 cache and 33% more memory bandwidth, therefore performance with OC will not be bottlenecked even when clock beyond 2GHz, especially with 8+8 power pin, it can easily reach GTX 1080 max speed or even more. (with custom loop). Because of it fully unlock OC capability, it probably comes in at $1200-$1500

Look like I finally see the whole picture, and screw those who still believe Titan will be a G5X variant by this Sept.

seems very possible i agree. Thanks for your idea for the wall mount and table , i will make a 2nd desktop LOL

Along with releasing the specifications, NVIDIA has announced that the PCIe Tesla P100 will be available in Q4 of this year.
Tesla in Q4 means first Titan (whatever it is) is either ~December 2016 at earlier (unlikely) or ~Jan/Feb 2017 (since it comes after Tesla obviously), with Vega also at about that time

hope this puts to rest August/September rumors

also 3584 is 40% more shaders than 1080, which could theoretically mean 40% more performance than an OCed 1080 (since also better memory), but only if the Titan is also ~2000+ Mhz, which remains to be seen if it will be possible (and if it is it will definitely require water)

if 1080Ti follows suit then air cooled 1080Ti may not clock as high as an air cooled 1080 ? Or will it ?

generally Id predict 1080Ti would be 25-30% above 1080 (keeping in line with the previous line), if it can clock reasonably high (since it will probably also have less than the 3584 SP of the Titan, thus 30%+ more shaders over 1080, rather then 40%)

Its look like the ball game with HBM is very different as compared to standard GDDR5, becz HBM are known to respond poorly to OCing. So whether ur memory bandwidth get bottlenecked, it depend mostly on Bus-Width

From what I see, the best Nvidia can clock for HBM2 is 1.4 gbps or 700MHz. Most likely due to absence or cut down of DP, Nvidia might lower the HBM clock for Titan to 625MHz (as it is still sufficient for stock speed). However once you overclock ur GPU, things start to change. For one, the base stock clock is definitely much lower than GTX 1080, most likely i believe is 1.4GHz - 1.6GHz core speed. So OC to 2GHz is much much more demanding when u have 40% more shaders than 1080. That bandwidth speed need to catch up proportionately.

480GB/s is definitely not going to be enough to feed the monster GPU once u charge them all the way to 2GHz. Which can hamper OCing potential. However for 16GB you have at least 640GB/s. That make it pretty good headroom for u to do crazy LN2 nonsense.

So where is the source that say Q4 is only Tesla not Titan?

Anandtech article came out before VRW, so they probably didnt realised Titan existence back den.

Late Sept or early Oct, Oct - Dec is the Q4 timeframe.

And...

If you check back ALL Titan history, they always release Titan at least 3 month before AMD release anything new. That itself is a more believing trend since it has happen thrice. Its always the Ti that compete with AMD highest offering. Always been the case till now.
