plenty of people with 980Ti/Titan X may decide to hold off a little longer and wait for 1080Ti instead of dumping money on the Titan P

especially if the big Titan P will be more than $1000
i agree wink.gif

Everyone expecting to see a 1080 TI even if AMD doesn't compete are delusional. Why on earth would nVidia compete with their own current top seller? No, they'll launch a luxury item instead which doesn't compete with the 1080 GTX and keep the prices of their medium size die HIGH.

If VEGA competes with the 1080 GTX then you'll see a 1080TI. But if Vega isn't competitive or delayed, you'll never see a 1080 TI, only an 1180 GTX much later.

Some of you have extremely short attention spans... where's the 680 TI? Oh yeah, doesn't exist.. didn't need to exist.. the 7970 barely competed with the 680.. So they sat on GK100 and released it as a 780 instead. That's what lack of competition does. But they sure did rush that 780 TI out the gate, making titan owners feel uneasy.. remember why?

Competition, competition and competition. Without it our hobby is stale.. much like intel's desktop processors.

well of course Vega is going to at least match 1080, thus competing with it

I mean its the top high-end chip of AMD, how can it not at least reach the "mid-range" 314 mm2 of the competition ?

by that logic, it should already be enough for the 1080Ti to come out no matter what and take over for 1080

unless there is a chance that if Vega = 1080 perf wise, then they just lower the price of 1080 a bit and settle at that

but thats not likely, is it ? they will just release a faster card to take the top spot .. so again - the 1080Ti will come, theres no way it doesnt come

Maybe, but I suspect they still want to sell new cards to 980Ti/TitanX owners and honestly the 1080 is not the card for them.

You also contradict yourself with your Intel example. Despite lack of competition Intel is still releasing HEDT processors. Just look at the 5960X, 5820K, 6950X, and 6900K. We got a 6 core on the entry level HEDT chip for the first time as well as an eight core chip for the first time. Now we're getting a 10 core chip for the first time. It certainly isn't competition from AMD pressuring them to do that. Also the OG Titan was released with no competition from AMD. That was the GK110 part. Besides the thread is primarily about Pascal Titan not the 1080Ti (or whatever they decide to call it) part.

You're talking like an GP100/GP102 product isn't already being tested by nVidia. They're not going to brand or release it until market forces justify its existence. Why should they launch their big chip as a 1080 TI and cannibalize 1080 GTX sales when AMD didn't even announce a Vega SKU yet. AMD don't even want to talk about Vega yet. Like with the 780, nVidia are sitting on it.

Or release factory overclocked 1080s. Think a little bit.. if they can sell a 300 mm^2 die for 600-700 bucks why on earth would they want to sell a 600 mm^2 for less than 1200-1400? Its wishful thinking! Much like expecting intel to release an 8 core desktop processor for 300$. They can, but they won't unless AMD forces them with Zen.

Why? nVidia is a corporation, they aren't your friend. The 1080 GTX is faster than your 980 TI, that's your upgrade. (or the 1400$ Titan P).

Extreme edition processors are luxury items.. just look at their price. They have more in common with the Xeon line (which has a large market with increasing needs, despite lack of competition. You can thank data servers or "the cloud" for that.) And that 10 core monster chip.. I'd rather get its equivalent Xeon which costs less hahahaha

I'm talking about the desktop variants.. they are all 4 core, 8 threads with similar clock speeds. As for the Titan you're actually proving my point.. there was no competition so they packaged GK100s into a hybrid gaming/workstation card they sold for 1000$. They'll do the same with GP100/GP102, they'll sell it like a luxury item, not a 1080 TI.

those already exist, the best AIB factory overclocked 1080 cards boost to 1950-2000 out of the box

a nice bump but nothing with which to beat Vega

for that they should have 1080Ti, which they will release when the time is right and I stand by that redface.gif

I never said that

of course they release Titan P first, milk it and then 1080Ti

rolleyes.gif I don't think they're anyone's friend. Wow they're a corporation? Thanks for your condescension. They know there are people who own 980Tis/TitanXs that won't buy 1080s. Even some of the marketing slides compared the 1080 to the 980. Same as the 980 slides being compared to the 680:

Presumably they'll want to sell those people new cards, and they're clearly not targeting them with the 1080.

Only if Vega releases on schedule or warrants it. If enough time passes they'll re-brand it a 1180 GTX. Ultimately the high end, or should I say affordable high end, is limited by AMD right now. Don't take a 1080 TI for granted.. if AMD screws up again, its another boring release schedule like we had with the 780.

Vega will release early 2017, its all but guranteed at this point, even by AMDs latest roadmap

and I certainly hope they wont rebrand 1080Ti as 1180 lol, since Volta is a new arch and should be quite different to Pascal

I dont even play to buy it, I went with the 1080 --> 1180 upgrade path instead of waiting for big dies

but I think it will definitely come
