I'm still using a 6950 unlocked to 6970 and a 290 unlocked to 290X in a pair of my systems.

It was actually the 9500 non pro, specifically. The pro used a different PCB which made it impossible to unlock because of a physical difference in memory layout. The 9500 used the 9700 PCB and simply had half the ROP/memory controller clusters disabled. The 9500 Pro had it's own PCB with only 128-bit worth of memory traces, but had all ROPs enabled already; there was no way to get it to 9700/9700pro performance, it was always severely memory bandwidth limited at the high-end.

I replaced my Ti 4600 with a vanilla 9500 that I unlocked and OC to a bit beyond 9700pro spec with aBIOS & pencil mod, was an awesome value at the time.

It's weird. If this is some result of binning, then wouldn't the memory chips be rejected before they are placed on the card? Seems like a lot of waste if they disable half of the memory chips after the fact.

Why would it be 2 different products that would make this retarded
If you have one product disable half the ram and say its a new product your lying because its the same thing just with the 4gigs disabled

It would make no sense if 4gigs were disabled and it was a new product because you wouldnt need to have the 4gigs disabled if it was a new product since they wouldnt be there in the first place (and if they were then again its the same product)

You cannot disable half of the chips, that would make it a 128-bit card and it would be very slow. They are restricting the memory use to half of each chip in BIOS. Each GDDR5 RAM chip has a 32-bit bus and is 4 or 8 gigabits so you need all 8 chips to have a 256-bit bus.

It looks like AMD didn't have any 4Gb RAM chips so they simply sold the 8GB cards with modified BIOSes as 4GB cards. biggrin.gif

Nice catch. The incredible value and performance put ATI on the map, at a time when nVidia was gearing up to release an absolutely awful line of products (fx 5800 Ultra). I stuck it out with my GeForce MX 440 until the next generation, and ended up getting a 9600xt. It was $150 and included Half Life 2. Good times...

Edit: I just realized how long ago that was, and Half Life 3 still isn't out.

It is ironic that someone is complaining about getting more vram for free, than getting variable speed ram that almost was reduced to save face. You just cant make some people happy.
