Buying a new graphics card, help me pick

Thread Starter
I am going to buy a new gpu probably this weekend or next week, not sure what to go with.

Currently running 1080p but looking to upgrade to 1440p VERY soon.

Was very interested in the RX 480 because of the price point & performance but after all this talk about them burning PCIe slots or not having enough power available to overclock, poor overclocking potential, or the really high temps when increasing the power slider... not really sure that is a great option and if I do go for an RX 480 then it won't be until aftermarket cards come out and everything is fixed up.

Was also very interested in the GTX 1070 but I always hear about Nvidia moving to a new architecture every 1-2 years and then the new drivers don't support the old architecture well and the cards lose performance. If I'm going to drop $600 on a graphics card, I don't want it to get "nurf'd" 2 years after I buy it because of drivers and actually lose performance. Not sure if Nvidia is still doing this and not carrying much support forwards for last gen cards, but I've heard of this happening multiple times and there was some controversy around it last year. AMD seems to keep current support for older gen cards for much longer.

I plan to keep this card for probably 3 years before upgrading. I also plan to put the card under custom liquid and doing some significant overclocking.

What do you guys recommend and why?

I'd wait another week or two and see what the AIB 480's can do. Also, the 1070 should be more in stock as well.

Or do what I did and buy a 290x because you can't wait thumb.gif

You have 2 options. Aftermarket 480 or 1070. If you can afford the extra for the 1070, go for it. Uses the same amount of power and performs a lot better. I love AMD but they have nothing to compete with the 1070 right now. Any issues with the RX480 will be fixed by aftermarket cards. I'm not surprised early adopters are dealing right issues, happens with both camps time to time.

Only thing i can see possibly helping them with just the RX480 out now is that t he DX12 performance seems to be much more efficient, and possibly VR?

I'll definitely have to wait a little while it seems, as everything is pretty much out of stock and I would like to see what happens with the RX 480.

Pretty much what I'm thinking. I heard Nvidia is supposed to do much better with Vulkan than AMD tho?
Little concerned dealing with Nvidia drivers though, been running AMDs mostly since I had so many issues years back with a pair of GeForce 7600 GTs. And it still seems that a lot of people I've talked to don't have much good to say about current Nvidia drivers, especially for aging/last gen cards.

The only driver issues you'll hear from both camps are of the minority. For every complaint, I'm sure there are 100 (Made this number up) people using them with no issues.

Briefly looking into DX12 I've concluded it's still a @#$#$show. Too early to draw a conclusion. So yeah, pay for more performance now (1070) or if the RX480 is good enough for you, go with that and save some coin.

I'm going RX480 aftermarket myself. I love supporting the idea of bringing the entry level VR market more affordable.

AMD does great with Vulkan from what I have read, but I could be wrong. It does struggle with OpenGL vs Nvidia though. If I were you, I would wait and see what the AIBs offer with the 480. No matter what they offer, though, I expect the 1070 to outperform even a custom 480.

Was about to make a thread myself.

After doing a bit of research/reading seems the best thing to do is wait until closer to the end of the year.

looks like I'll be waiting a little while anyways. May as well ask this question while I'm at it...

Any recommendations on a 1440p monitor? Want something badass but don't want to sell my house to afford it.

Korean Panels is what I'd suggest. Qnix.. Xstar...
One suggestion:

or maybe a 29 inch widescreen instead:
