Got a gtx 1080 for a day. Here's what I found.

Hey guys, I'm not an owner but I'd like to share this with anyone interested in the gtx 1080.

My buddy just got two of these from Zotac in SLI. He let me borrow one for a day because I was curious to do my own tests on it plus I look after his place while he's on vacay.

Was tested in my sig rig with the case closed with the room temperature being 21.5c / 71f.

PrecisionX OC was used to monitor everything but all settings were left alone, no adjustments were made except for one. In the driver settings, it was set to prefer maximum performance.

The following pic was taken after 25 minutes of running Fallout 4. I found a spot in Sanctuary with 100% gpu usage and left the character standing there the whole time to ensure constant 100% usage to heat soak the card to see how bad the throttling really is.

Temperature stabilized at 83c after just a few minutes. The clock rate settled to what you see it at in the pic. 1734 MHz is the lowest frequency it went.

I sit about two feet from the case and the gpu fan is inaudible over the rest of the case fans. Measured 50 db average.

I'm going to do some overclocks with a custom fan profile before I give the card back.

Comparing to my 980 Ti with a modified bios running 1451 MHz all day long, this 1080 is about 10% faster out of the box.

By contrast, gaming with my 980 Ti for an hour often puts the room temperature up to 24c, a 2.5c uptick.

The 1080 basically put the temp up to 22c. A 0.5c uptick.

Not surprising as the 980 Ti has a much higher tdp and mine is modified with a higher power target.

Will add some more info later.

Here's pic of the 1080 and my 980 Ti together.

With a custom fan profile maxing out at 70%, I was able to get the card to stick to 1911 MHz overclock.

At 70%, the gpu fan was slightly more noisy than the case fans.
