I would have zero hesitation at all from slapping a reference 480 in my old P67 Sabertooth and over volting the pee out of it.

Overdrawing the pcie slot, Jesus Christ.... rolleyes.gif

Right. Like the 970 which was performing to spec, or GFE where people claim the sky are falling and nvidia are going to control the universe. No over reaction at all. rolleyes.gif

Some AMD fanboys are way too hypocritical these days as well, like the ones who bought the dual titans for 2000$ and then claim a 700$ GPU is way overpriced and everyone who buy it are idiots, right?

Since several reviews have shown that the 480 cause shut downs and issues, and some claimed dead motherboards, of course it is all fake and nvidia are behind it and you will over volt your old overpriced then P67 and show us that everything is fine with a high end motherboard, because everyone who buy a 200$ are also buying a 220$ high end motherboard.

Lets all support AMD's mistakes, because of... reasons.

Pointing out AMD's mistakes (or any company's) is all well and good when the intention is to troubleshoot and ensure a proper fix. There's no denying, though, that there is a subclass of poster that comments on AMD with the rubbish air of indignation normally reserved for grieving relatives in courtrooms shouting at the smiling killer that shot their uncle. Investing that kind of emotion into discussions makes those of us who purchase from the red, blue. and green without prejudice sound like fans by comparison, simply because it's human nature to respond to the bombastic hyperbole that floods these threads.

Unless anybody has any real proof that RX 480's were going into systems and just blowing them up, or melting down PCIe slots en masse, then yes, the issue has been overblown. And that's sad because it is an issue for a few people but they're lost in the noise as their concerns are tossed as grist for the mill of people who hate a hardware company to the point of a weird personal vendetta.

Point is that there had been several video reviews posted on OCN several times now of reviewers saying that some systems have been shutting down, some people posted pictures on reddit of their burned ATX connectors or their dead PCIE slots.

Some people dismiss it as fraud that it is no proof, yet they also have no proof that it is untrue as well.
So... give and take. You can't claim one thing is "overblown" when you go on something else and "overblown" that.

So... give and take. You can't claim one thing is "overblown" when you go on something else and "overblown" that.

I've never said that there isn't an issue with the  RX 480's power delivery setup. AMD really should have caught the issue beforehand, obviously. I have said that it's overblown when people start talking about how AMD will now inevitably collapse, or that any product they make will now be doomed to fail. If we're resorting to those kinds of prognostications we might as well throw the bones or consult an oracle. Overblown doesn't mean no issue, it means issue being taken completely beyond all reasonable concern. For example, a police interrogation might be considered a reasonable procedure for obtaining facts about a person. An Holy Inquisition would probably be an overblown response. Some greenblooded individuals seem like they're about one fellow concern troll away from heading to the town square to round up the pitchforks and torches.

There are people who've had real issues with the RX 480. It's also overwhelmingly likely that the majority have not (unless 51% of all purchased RX 480's are now destroyed or RMA'd which would be a big story methinks) and that every RX 480 that rolls off the production line is not in fact a timed explosive.

On AM2 or 775 boards man.
What is the point in buying a 480 when you have a system like that? the CPU is too weak to take full advantage of this GPU anyway.
5 year old 60-80$ boards run the 480 just fine for example or did you miss that?

Anyway why are you so negative when it comes to AMD?
All you do is attack them and defend their competitors no matter what.

There is a reason no actual hardware veterans post here anymore. This place is such a joke at this point. Let the kids get their rocks off, those same kids will be the unintelligible ones who have no factual opinion other then what the flavor of the month permits.

Hell, we have actual computer engineers posting in defence of AMD but obviously their expertise is much below that of illogical and and popular opinions on a piece of hardware they have never, and will never, own.

If a mid range, $200 GPU means that much to the sanctity of brand alliance, then they have no concept of what subjective discovery actually means.

Nope. Unless it's some trash board that has issues to begin with.

So... give and take. You can't claim one thing is "overblown" when you go on something else and "overblown" that.

I can show you some blown motherboards with any GPU you want if that convinces you in either direction. A 24 pin connector is NOT going to get burnt from an overloaded pcie slot. That is just so ridiculous it's almost nauseating thinking about the ignorance that has to be imbedded in ones head to even think that is possible. Since when do we feed direct current from a 24 pin connector to any aib component? that doesn't even make sense.

The fear mongering has become so prevalent that it has done its job. It has made people believe the opposite of what is true. Quite frightening really.

And please give me one way to disprove those that post faulty or exaggerated photos or information....o wait, there is none. We are forced to take the word of someone on the internet who has absolute immunity from judgement beyond their own admission.

I don't even get what you are trying to say. I might as well murder people and post their dead bodies and proclaim Bigfoot killed them. Clearly I must be correct since I said it and you can't prove otherwise...give me a break.

What is more frightening is that these are the future generations, and those who get to vote for their next leader in their respected countries.
It certainly goes a fair way to explain why Trump became so popular.

Overdrawing the pcie slot, Jesus Christ.... rolleyes.gif

I hear you and even understand where you are coming from. Except at the same time, many of us own and actively use both AMD and Nvidia hardware and feel compelled obviously to let our opinions be heard regarding any discreet GPU matter as we see fit. And no, you didn't say otherwise, just pointing it out. :D

What are we labelled? Do we even guess or know the percentage of us that have and still use both in our household? Steam won't help with that lol.

My opinion is that just as this was overblown like you said for something that likely would have affected a small percentage of RX480 owners and possibly near any normal failure rate. Fact is we won't know now of course as we don't have a time machine to test both scenarios, with the new adjusted Bios and without it.

Interspersed in many of the comments are even purely Nvidia owners that wholesale recognize this as overhyped obviously and is just one leg of the perception of the bad AMD PR/marketing table. It's not the end of the world of course.

All that said:

This was not something AMD is ignorant about. Knowing the expected testing that reviewers are going to perform. Knowing the Internet "Reaction" to any perceived problem in today's market, and finally Knowing the performance / electrical envelope of their own product, I'm more shocked that AMD did not see this coming.

A very harsh "opinion" might see it as doing a disservice to their loyal customers allowing this to occur in the first place as they are not uninformed little 15 year olds. No different than the 970 crap NVidia pulled, they are paid professional GPU engineers and Architects so moreso from that fact some might not feel they deserve a pass in this debacle.

But then again, should we hold any of our GPU Overlord Masters to a higher standard? A slave wonders... :o

It certainly goes a fair way to explain why Trump became so popular.

I'm closing in on 50 years old so when I hear that I say future? I'd like to be considered a future generation lol. I don't think we've ever taken a poll of age in GPU enthusiasts. There may be a perception of us giving opinions as mostly Halo/BF/CoD playing 18 - 25 year olds. Though many of those buying even midrange and of course high end already have jobs and families and are well established adults.

So I don't think the future is relevant, we are already here :D for good or ill.
Again while a good sounding talking point, I don't think one has anything to do with another.  I could talk more on it but that would seriously breach the forum guidelines regarding *cough toxic corrupt Politics.
