Good you got it working. My guess is it was messing with the config files. I've had that before where it would override xorg.conf. Check out the show your Linux thread to see what people are using.

No problem, graphics and sound issues in Linux are definitely the least fun to sort out, it's really nice when things just work in that area. It's good you got it working, if it happens again now you have some idea of where to start looking for problems!

Any guess on why Mate was a problem but Cinnamon was not? I did not know the desktop environment was so picky. Up until now I just used the one i liked. Been running Mate for a long time and yet now I have to switch. Oh well, at least my system is doing what I want.

I've only seen tearing when there's a compositor involved so not really sure about the likelihood of other causes but I do know Mate has optional compositing, so if you had any eye candy fx going (e.g. shadows, transparency) then that would have involved compositing

May I ask what desktop you all use? And what version of Linux? if you do not mind

Mainly Debian Jessie and Wheezy, to make weird problems less likely to happen I start from the Netinstall and build up a desktop environment from there, starting with a WM and then adding extras like compositor and application launcher.

Thread Starter
Thanks for the info an yes I do have a little better idea about linux. I hav been using it for almost 2 years but when things do not break there is no reason to fix them. I am committed to linux.

Thanks again for you time and knowledge. Think I will hang more in this section of the forums and see what I can learn.
