Gsync and Overwatch killing input lag solutions and questions (May help non Gsync users too)

Hi everyone!

I have been playing a lot of Overwatch and it's the first shooter I have played in quite a few years. I have been running with Gsync on and Vsync on via nvidia control pannel with my new monitor and have been happy until I stumbled across some people saying that running the game on full ultra with Gsync on has massive input lag. I really didn't know any better before but now that I have tested it I can definitely agree.... Full Ultra with Gsync+Vsync causes massive input lag in the game.

I did a lot of searching and personal testing and have found a way to completely kill input lag in overwatch that I would like to share with you all, However it is not the easiest solution as it requires adjusting settings after each reboot if you are running Gsync. If anyone has a better solution please post!!!

Here is what you need to do assuming you currently have your settings at full ultra... Assuming this works for everyone not just people with Gsync

In the game video options menu turn OFF Vsync, Tripple Buffering, Limit FPS, Dynamic Reflections, Ambient Occlusion. I am not sure why the last two cause lag but they do even with my GTX 1070.

Next thing for people with Gsync monitors who want to run Gsync in the game....

Depending on your video card with the above settings you will exceed the refresh rate of your monitor. From what I understand about Gsync from reading on blur busters and watching various youtube videos you will have the least input lag on Gsync if you in some way cap the FPS of your game to around 5 FPS lower than the maximum refresh rate of your monitor. If you have a 144hz monitor that would mean capping around 138 and 55 for 60hz. The only solution I found to do this for Overwatch was downloading nvidia inspector and using the profile inspector tool to change the setting "Frame Rate Limiter" under Sync and Refresh to 138 FPS. This hard locks your framerate via the driver and after doing some testing in Overwatch I can say that this nearly kills all detectable input lag from running Gsync. HOWEVER this setting does not hold on a reboot. You must open nvidia inspector each time you reboot and set the FPS limit. If anyone has a better solution to limiting the FPS please let me know. I saw someone saying you could do it from the games settings file in your my docs folder but I could not figure out how to get it to do that.

Vsync is your issue. It is never needed when running a game with Gsync on. Vsync causes input lag.

It is to my understanding that if you turn Gsync on and Vsync off as soon as you exceed the maximum refresh rate of your monitor Gsync automatically gets disabled. In this case while running my posted settings on my card I get around 150 FPS so unless I limit the framerate in some way with either vsync at 144fps or another way at around 138fps even with Gsync on in NCP it won't be giving me any benefit.

Doesn't Overwatch have a built in frame rate limiter? I thought I saw that in the settings.

I'm getting a Gsync monitor and a 1080 this week, I'll have to try it out when I get them.

It does and it caps your FPS 10~ above your refresh max, be it 60, 120 or 144. There is no reason to disable it.

By default, Overwatch saw that I had a 144Hz monitor, and the built in limiter set itself to 143fps to prevent going over my refresh rate. I keep gysnc on, and vsnc off (both in-game and nvidia control panel), High settings.

I don't see any input lag using the built in limiter @ 143fps, but maybe I am just not sensitive enough to notice it?

It does but you can't really set it the way you need to. It either does 30 FPS or 10 FPS above your refresh rate. Not really ideal in either scenario. What I listed in the OP works great.. You just have to change the setting every reboot.

It's not overwatch doing this. I think there was some form of a change made by nvidia. I have been testing this just now. If I disable Vsync in NCP and in game but leave Gsync on my framerate gets capped at 143 in any game I can get that high of FPS in. Maybe Nvidia realized that they need to set a limit? It didn't do that before on my old Nvidia card.

The display based limit option caps my fps to 70 when it should be 144. Also, I have to change refresh rate whilst in-game because it always starts bellow 60hz even though I launch the game at 144hz.. I'm using an Asus PG279Q and GTX 1070.

If I turn the display limit off I'll crash mid-game, or so. I've been locking the fps using Rivatuner and I haven't crashed since with display limit off. You generally shouldn't use Vsync, nor do you want to have Gync activated if you want the least input lag possible.

Gsync is quite important to me. I actually always used to use Vsync before Gsync existed because for whatever reason if a game was running uncapped or unsynced it bothered me. It's hard to describe but a game that is running with Gsync or Vsync off makes my eyes hurt a bit or just makes me feel uneasy. I had tested this many times and even had a friend turn it on and off so I didn't know what was what to make sure it wasn't a placebo.
