Samsung 950 Pro won't format

Hi all,

First post here, hope somebody can help solve my little problem.

I bought a 950 Pro (500 Gb) a while back and initially installed the SSD and used Samsung Data Migration software to move my OS on to this drive. It ran OK for a while but then something happened and my pc refused to boot into Win 7. Fortunately I still had my OS on an 840 EVO so I got it all fired up off that. Since then I have moved OS on to an 850 PRO which seems to be running fine and also upgraded to Win 10 which also seems to be running fine.

I've been thinking about getting back into doing some video capture and editing so I thought the 950 PRO would be good to use as a capture drive. I've installed the 950 in the M.2 slot on my M/board but I cannot for the life of me get the SSD formatted.

System is an Asus X99 Deluxe, I7-5820 K (stock), 16Gb of DDR4 Corsair Vengeance, 2 X GTX 980 in SLI and M/board is running version 3004 bios.

Both Samsung Magician and Computer management see the 950 as does Windows explorer. It's been secure erased and set up as both MBR and GPT but steadfastly refuses to format whether I use quick format or the long winded method. I also have the Nvme driver installed which is reported in magician. I'm guessing there's something not quite set right bios wise or the ssd is fubar. I'm not particularly well up on Bios settings etc so I've come to the end of all I know in trying to get it running.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.... currently feeling like I wasted a few hundred quid. Hopefully it doesn't mean a complete re-install. I've read a fair bit of the 950 owners club thread and done a fair bit of googling. Just to re-iterate, I'm not planning on using this SSD as my OS drive just purely for capture.

Cheers in advance.

If the old SSD still works, I would reinstall the 950 pro as the boot drive with windows 10 (mine took ~10minutes or less) . Then once windows 10 is installed, plug the 850 pro in as a secondary. Then just copy any files off of it onto the 950 pro that you want to keep. BTW you can do a USB with windows 10 on it, and use your windows 7 code when it ask you for a cd key, and activate it.

Cheers for that, it's what I've been working up to in my mind. A few days off work next week so a fresh install looks like the way I'll be going using the 950 as the OS drive and using the 850 as the capture drive.
