AMD RX 480 DID NOT brick my motherboard. Water leak? - Page 8

Back in the 775 days, I had an intel 975 motherboard get a drop of water on it near the top PCI-e connector, it worked fine when I shut it off but after I carefully dried it up and let it sit in the AC for a few days to dry out the motherboard was dead. I've tried it several times since then (years later) and it's still broken. The GPU that was in it still works to this day though.

If this turns out to be the case, I think the title of this thread needs to be changed because it does not truthfully explain what happened. It's pretty rude as far as a blatant claim with no further testing. It should have at least had a question mark after it or something.

Title could be correct in regards to having a defective RX 480. You are a brave soul to put it in another machine. I think people are relating this to the pcie powergate? Hopefully you get another mainboard on the cheap. Good luck thumb.gif

Try using a pci vid card as well.

OK, so the Intel machine is booting with the RX 480, and its showing low quality video, because its running 32 bit winxp, and I cant get online with it just yet to get a 32 bit driver. Thats tomorrow. Its looking like I mustve damaged the mobo with water. Disgusting I would be so negligent.

The BIOS of the intel board did say in red, Warning, this VGA adapter may not operate correctly, or something like that, lol. So my board is smoked, not from the RX 480 probably, but who really knows. Maybe it was on the verge, and the swap through it over the edge.

EDIT: Wait, I cant get a 32 bit driver for this, duh! lol

RX 480 does work tho, it seems. Cant test full bore with driver tho... Unless it goes in my s939 machine?? PCI-E 1.1 tho, so not gonna try it. smile.gif

The RX 480 is going to be given a fair chance at proving itself tonight on my core 2 duo combo sitting in a box in my closet. If it works out fine, then I'll consider my loss due to water somehow getting past my observation, and continue to test the CPU first on a friends machine. If CPU is fine, then a replacement board will have to happen, or I wait til AM4, and sell all my left over goodies. CPU, RAM, all water cooling (lets face it, W/C isn't THAT much better than air, depending on environment) and i can forget about the mess that W/C really is. Plus I can't risk losing my gear because of WATER. Atrocious.

I've been on this forum for a GRIP. A shill or troll, absolutely not. Irate and very upset at my hundreds of dollar loss, you can bet your donkey.

I can understand you being upset and blaming AMD. You were all psyched up about your new gpu and now you don't have a computer. I highly doubt it was the card itself but something happened during its installation. Maybe your board was compromised in some way. Maybe a leak, whatever. I lost a Sabertooth 990FX R2 that I used for benching when I dropped a screwdriver on it and shorted it out. There is always a risk when you are working with electricity and hardware. You can get 1st generation Sabertooths like you had, UD3 R4's, and other good boards cheap on eBay if you work at it.

If someone would loan me 4 cards I would load them in my board and give it hell.

Thank you for changing the thread title. Let this be a reminder to not make such bold claims in thread titles before doing testing. Who knows how much it hurt AMDs marketing for no reason. Not really fair to any company. Uneducated people will form opinions over bullcrap titles without reading further. Glad the 480 works. I'm sure if it boots at all it will be fine. Too bad about your board, just happens in this hobby. Especially with water and static.

That's the spirit!

So? A water leak in the end? Or the mobo simply deciding that it had enough of the shenanigans of swapping parts all the time and decided to take a rest?
