Core i7-6950X

Thread Starter
I'm actually thinking of getting the 10 core 6950X CPU. If the 6900X proves to be just as good, then I may go that route. Plus its cheaper.

I'm going to populate it 128gig, which it would max it out.

What are your thoughts?

Joe

If it all the same to you get the 6950X. What are you planning on doing with all of this CPU and memory?

Might as well get the new Rampage V Extreme Version 10 and stick four of the new Titan GPUs coming out in the next few weeks in it.

Good point. Unless you are competing on hwbot or doing some serious workload, there is no reason to get this cpu, except for epeen. It's overclocks are underwhelming and for most uses a 6 core 5820k will do everything needed at a lot less cost. First 10 core "mainstream" cpu is a fail in my opinion. Most are happily computing on last gen with no real need to go this route.

I do extensive video editing for my two yourtube channels, and my 3770K with 32gig of ram is not cutting it any longer. It works, but its not as fast I would want it. I'm also looking to get a OPENCL video card such as the R9 380x. It renders faster than the nvidia cards. playing games will not be the primary use. I do game, but not that much. I currently have the 980 ti and the GTX 580 which run my 6 monitor setup. The 980ti does NV surround which is cool. I plan on running a few VMs.

a 53 minute 1080p video take about 2.25 hours to render.

My thoughts are why aren't you telling us more about what your intentions are with the system.

There you go. I have two 5960X rigs with 128GB ram in each for very similar reasons. I have four 980tis in one of them, four 780tis in the other.

Something you might consider if you want an openCL card is picking up a used r9 295x2 for cheap or even a pair of them. I have an x79 rig with 64gb ram and two of the x2s. I get quad gpu power and still have space to run two 800gb Intel 750 PCIe SSDs in raid 0.

The 10 core is a sweet chip but I am excited for Skylake-X. 48PCIe lanes is something I am very interested in.

What speed of memory are you interested in? I am going to be offloading a couple of 128GB 2800MHz G.Skill ripjaws kits as soon as my G.Skill trident 3200MHz kits come in.

Gotcha. I am personally waiting for next gen as oc'ing and hwbot are my primary uses and BW-E seems like a oc turd atm. I prefer the AMD cards myself. Unfortunately, they haven't been able to compete even with some disables since 290x, except for compute.
