How bad is it to underutilize a PSU? - Page 2

No worries, you won't get the full efficiency rating out of your PSU running it with a low draw but it will not hurt it in any way. I am currently running a Seasonic X series 1250w PSU while just running a 6700k OCed to 4.5 & a 980ti OCed to 1503/2000 which pulls maybe 350w from the wall if I am pushing it hard. Now that said I am running such a large PSU because I had a R9 390 & R9 290X CFXed before I got my 980ti & I needed that much power when those beasts were OCed. I do not recommend going so overkill on your PSU especially with Nv & AMD focusing so much on perf. per watt nowadays. Although if you have a beefy PSU laying around & want use that rather than buy a new smaller PSU there is nothing wrong with it & it will not hurt any components or the PSU itself. thumb.gif

It's not bad at all.

In fact it's very good for reliability and longevity. PSU components (like capacitors) experiment much less stress while at 'half throttle', ripple is lower, fan is quieter, etc.

If we can live with the higher purchasing cost (and perhaps a slightly lower efficiency at very low loads), an oversized PSU ain't a bad idea at all.
