That means that the GTX 960 Should have performed equal to or higher than the GTX 780, no? (Since we're comparing GM206 (which is small chip) to GM104 (which is previous generation mid chip) And not better than two generations LOW-mid chip (Which we all know, the 670 was)

Or am I missing something in your analysis.

The GTX 780 wasn't a mid-grade chip. It was large Kepler GK110. GM204(GTX 980) does have a substantial performance gain over GK110(GTX 780Ti)

GPU Boost 3.0 pushes the cards pretty hard right out of the box, since it'll basically look for the best speed it can get at any one voltage level. That's why we're seeing "Subpar" OCs.

If you're comparing attained boost levels to what the cards are specified as then it's impressive. But we see a lot of cards that are specced to boost to 1800, but they're actually boosting to low 19s, sometimes even low 20s with a lottery winner.

Please note, I'm running a GTX 980 ti, 2x 680's in another machine and 2x 580's in my kids and two R9 290s in another. I use what fits my needs at the time. No fanboy here. They (AMD/nVidia) aren't family; they certainly aren't friends and they don't owe me any money.

Scumbags. Based on things like this, I'm buying vega no matter what. I don't care how good the nVidia card at the time is.

Yeah, i ditched my 960 for 380x last year because of Nvidia's anti-consumer behaviour of late.

It just does not make sense to cut the SLI support for mid-range GPUs since it is a good option for an average consumer in this segment. Sure, no point in spending on 2 GPUs for SLI instead 1 powerful at once, but buying a 1060 now and few months later when there is a sale (e.g. Black Friday) get a potential boost from additional 1060 would be great.

The 480 looks like it was a hurried implementation brought out to refresh their lineup as was desperately needed and update the low-end high tier segment for AMD. Performance looks right above a 290 for right around the price with better support in games, 8gb of memory, and crossfired frankly the results look impressive for AMD.

I think comparing the 1060 so heavily to the 480 is forgetting that the 470 will be selling under the 480 and it doesn't look there will be much loss- but they had to refresh their lineup and beat NVIDIA out even if it wasn't the pinnacle of the chip or a huge step above their higher-tiered offerings. Seems like the 470 may well be right at the 480's heels for less money and that may be exactly how it was intended, that the lower tiers were the main focus and while the upper echelon is a big upgrade for them crossfired and a big refresh in its price range for future sustainability it wasn't a ton to write home about.

That's how I've come to all of my multi-GPU setups. I buy one and then if there's a sale or the price dips, I add a second card. I've actually been shopping 980TIs for the same reason. I'm going to hold off now. I think I'll wait for vega.

980 @ 1500mhz - 6.14 tf

1060 @ 2050mhz - 5.24 tf,

so 1060 won't beat a oc 980. tongue.gif since maxwell/paswell ipc is same looking at 1080/70.

pretty fail by some people's standards haa. and that price lol.

I hear you there, but in doing so, we're still perpetuating the idea that it's okay to overcharge for sub par products. (Which admittedly, AMD has also been guilty of, whatwith the whole 7970 ordeal.) The main reason I avoided AMD when I bought my last card (GTX 670) was back then there was a lot of driver issues being shoved around in forums, so I was apprehensive to dive into it) But now that AMD has somewhat gotten their driver mess in order, that no longer holds true.

Literally the ONLY advantage I see in Nvidia cards is the fact that they're far more efficient. But that efficiency doesn't make up for some of their sleezeball tactics aimed at milking people dry. So I'd rather support the competition (Knowing that I'm not getting as much performance) in order to stimulate competition.

Ah return of the founders edition, called it. So where is all those people that were freaking out about the extra $40 it cost to get the 8gb 480? I guess they see $50 for 3gb a better deal?
