Is it a myth or true that if your GPU has a large amount of available VRAM that the game will know that and automatically use more with what's needed to render? I've heard a good amount of people say that a game like BF4 at ultra graphics can easily use ~4GB VRAM if you've got a card with 6-8GB... then a card with 4GB VRAM will only use around 3GB in the game...

Yes, the engines cache as much data as deemed possibly needed in the memory buffer. It serves purely as cache - if the data is actually requested, it doesn't need to be fetched.

That's why I could actually run Shadows of Mordor on 5760x1080 with the Ultra texture pack on a single 4GB R9 290 without stuttering due to memory bottlenecking. smile.gif

Yes I'm sure. But that is a long way from saying 4GB is insufficient for 1080p, and has been that way for years.

Handful of games for virtually no IQ upgrade could go over 4GB. Only one I've encountered so far is Rise of Tomb Raider. I don't run into VRAM limits with 4xmsaa 1600p GTA V, I run into horsepower limits if I try to have higher settings.

Give it 12-18 months and it might be a common issue, but is not an issue now, never mind the last 3-4 years.

Oh I agree. 4GB for 1080 is fine. I just meant that 4GB for 1440p/1600p is hitting it's limit for some time now in modern titles smile.gif.

A far cry (pun intended) from the claims made about 4GB outdated @ 1080p for years.

It's the case with most games. Ultra is useless. Almost no difference between high and ultra.

4GB is plenty for 1920 x 1080. I wouldn't want to go below that though. I also wouldn't go below 6GB at 2560 x 1440 anymore.

Yea I found myself saturating most of my 4gb a lot on the 290x at 1440p. my side-grade to the RX480 was worth losing a couple frames for the 8gb of vram.

I get to 80C under load and the fan is kind of an annoying pitch but with a reference cooler I expected that. I have only tested Tomb Raider 2013 benchmark and
Black Ops 3. In TR I went from 99 average frames to 94 but BO3 was using 3.89gb of vram on the 290x and 4.4gb on the 480 and my frames stayed the same. That was before I tweaked it. There is a lot you can do in wattman to make it run cooler and perform better. I am happy with my switch but I am going to try an add onto/ modify/ replace the stock cooler. I want to keep the blower design though.

EDIT: I have these games at near max, but not max AA and some other settings turned from ultra to high. Also, after playing BO3 last night for 3 hours my peak vram usage was 6.4gb but usually near 5gb. One more note, I had a 1440p screen for games and a 1080p on the side before, but have another 1080p on the side this time.

If you know someone with a machine shop or proper tools, just make a copy of the aluminum heatsink out of copper instead. Seems like the 'easiest' fix if you want to keep the blower cooler atleast. Assuming you have access to the people or tools that is.
