Sorry but the 290x has just been 1 of the best GPU's all times in my book.
For me on par with the 8800 back then wich was also a heavenly card.

It was made to win over the 780, it then went on to take the 780ti.
Now its above a 970 and competing at times with a 980.
What is there not to love ?

I think outside of Asynchronous compute GCN derived cards are at a dead end when it comes to performance improvements over time. AMD with DX11 just had a ton of low hanging fruit in terms of driver improvement whereas DX12 already fixed pretty much all problems GCN had. DX12 is also much less dependent on good drivers so there's already much less, if any, performance you can gain from better drivers. By turning on Async Compute in most cases AMD cards only gain by like 10% which suggests that DX12 alone is already having GCN use its resources extremely well already.

The ride was nice with GCN aging with DX11 but a gift can't keep on giving.

AMD's RX 480 is a better deal though, but comes with worse overclocking/power/noise/heat. Psychologically the $299 price point is a bit much, because it is $100 higher than the $199 that AMD promised for RX 480, and still 70 bucks more than what you can actually buy AMD product for. If GTX 1060 was more like $279, then the $50 difference would certainly lure in buyers to save up just a bit more money to be able to afford the GTX 1060. Soon we will be seeing custom design cards for GTX 1060 (some even today) and custom design RX 480s should be out real soon too, which could shift the balance slightly, but overall I'd say GTX 1060 comes out a winner over RX 480. All these considerations were assuming that GTX 1060 pricing will gravitate towards the Founders Edition price of $299 - just like it is happening right now with GTX 1070 and GTX 1080. Should there be actual GTX 1060 cards in the market at $249, then this will destroy any hopes of AMD, because then GTX 1060 will beat it in Performance per Dollar too, with no clear wins left for AMD to convince potential buyers.

also that $249 newegg WindForce 1060 is already sold out, damn

so to sum it up a bit
dx12 480 is ahead
dx11 non gameworks games is on par sometimes 480 is ahead
dx11 gameworks games 1060 is ahead

so far out of 26 sites only 2 did a vulcan test and only 4 did a dx12 test
that is just pathetic

Async compute is supposed to be a hardware feature that should have been present from day one,not something you need to "support"

Pascal is not able to do async compute + graphics.

They are talking about the Founders Edition card (because that is what they are reviewing) which is terrible in value. A reference 480 is definately better than the FE 1060 in terms of value even though both of those cards aren't that great (480 ref runs hot, noisy, power delivery issues and FE 1060 is a scam).
