Developer Turtle Rock has announced that co-operative shooter Evolve will now be free-to-play on PC. The news was posted on the official Evolve website, and follows on from speculation that the game would be switching to a F2P model after the studio teased a big announcement for tonight.

Turtle Rock has confirmed the game will also be updated with various tweaks and changes. A list of some of these can be found below.

We’re reworking the hunter classes to make the team less reliant on having experienced trappers and medics.
We’re making improvements to the maps and UI.
We’re improving load times, overall performance, and getting you into the game faster.
We’re focusing on improving stability and fixing bugs.
We’re completely reworking our progression system and tutorials.
We’re adding more customization options.

Those who purchased Evolve will be granted "Founder" status in the new free version, and all the content already owned will stay. Players with the Founder status will be granted "gifts, rewards, and special access."

Note to self: don't buy online-only games.

Well, it's only the not-super-good games that go F2P..

Given that TF2 went f2p... There's a good chance Overwatch will also.. biggrin.gif

I highly doubt Overwatch will ever go F2P. I use WoW as my primary example. Even amidst its demise, they've maintained their payment model (mostly).

This seems like it should've happened from the get-go, or at least a few months after launch.

Now? There is no way this does much of anything to spark interest.

The game is still dead.

business model changes all the time. WOW use to be sub only to play now its f2p with some restriction. probably in a year or 2 OW Will go F2P and they will follow LOL route where you have to pay for skins and etc and use ingame currency or purchase each characters.

Also I love the concept of this game not sure why its not popular but "dead by daylight" is popular

For the 30 or so dollars I spent for this game on launch I certainly got my moneys worth in enjoyment.

A little disappointing nonetheless. The past years have let me down, first SWTOR and now this.

Who knows, maybe this will breathe some more life into the game.

I would be pretty pissed off if I had bought the game on launch and then it became free-to-play.

i bet it will have a p2w system because the greed never stops.
they sold the game at 50 or 60 plus the other bs (2 season pass) and it didn't offer more that a few hours of content.
it was a simple arena mp game with 3 or 4 monsters and a team of 4 classes.
the concept was good but repetitive...
