How to conenct two HDMI monitors to single HDMI port ?

Thread Starter
Hi,

I have a motherboard that has one HDMI port but I want to connect two HDMI monitors, how I can do that ?
I'm guessing you want to extend the monitors and not duplicate, so a passive hdmi splitter won't do.

USB 3.0 to dvi adapter (can then use dvi to hdmi cable)

Or this, two hdmi monitors plug in, and this box plugs to the hdmi on the rig, it makes your two 1080p monitors appear as a single 3840x1080 monitor to the OS.

Thanks spinFX but I want to run two applications each one in separate monitor so what is your advise ?
I'm pretty sure that the items he posted would allow just that. The USB DVI adapter might be easier to work with, as your computer would recognize it as a totally separate monitor, whereas the Matrox splitter will make your computer think that it just has 1 double-width monitor, which will make using programs in full screen weird, though newer versions of windows will let you use Win+LeftArrow or Win+RightArrow to snap a program to the left or right half of the screen, which would be basically look like a maximized window on each monitor with the Matrox solution. I have no idea what you should expect as far as performance goes with either solution though.

Edit: All that said, neither solution seems like a very cost effective one. Is there any reason you aren't considering just buying a video card? You said you want to do this with a motherboard that only has one port, but didn't give any more information. If it's a laptop, yeah, you might be stuck with the above solutions, but if it's a typical desktop motherboard, you could buy a budget video card for less than the above solutions, though beyond additional ports, it won't be much better than onboard video, or if you're ok with spending a little over $100, you can get a fairly good video card.

Every HDMI splitter I'm aware of is mirror-mode only where the same image is displayed on multiple screens. A USB-to-DVI or USB-to-HDMI is your easiest and cheapest option.

Can USB to HDMI work normally with QHD monitor ?
I'm assuming this is the ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer you mentioned in an older post. If so, why not use a DVI to HDMI adapter cable from your existing output? Maybe I'm wrong, but I would expect that & your HDMI port to both be usable at the same time. If not, this is a desktop build, it would be easy to install whatever video card suits your needs. The budget one I added in my earlier edited post will support 3 1080p monitors simultaneously, but would not be good for anything graphically intensive. I use the same card (GT720, different brand) in my work machine. It works fine for 2D CAD work, but struggles with any games. I would assume the results with 2xQHD monitors would be similar. The GTX 950 I mentioned is by no means I high end card, but is worlds better than the GT720 if you're looking to do anything more intense & would also be a good option if you're trying to keep the budget from getting too crazy. My specific recommendation would change depending on your exact needs, but I don't think a splitter is the best approach in a desktop.
