[Yibada] ‘Half Life 3’ release date and latest rumors: VR-ready version possible in 2018 - Page 3

Does it really matter if it live up to the hype or not? Valve would make record breaking sales on it even though it would be complete turd. If I were Gabe, that alone would be good reason to make it.

the time came and went. It if was going to be made it should have been by now, imo.

Much like duken nuken forever, was vaporware for so long then a different studio bought the rights and tried to capitalise on the franchise and hype. Didnt work out and wasnt a worthy successor. Not quite the same as valve still owns the rights

The original was a masterpiece of interactive story telling. The theme, the story line, the AI that the enemy soldiers had were all unparalleled at the time. Afaic, it was a perfect game, and the reviews at the time reflected such. I watched a video of some guy playing it in vr recently, even just watching the video, the way the game, the character the theme is introduced to the player was encapsulating.

Half life 2 was a good game, fun to pay, but half life 1 was in a league of its own at the time

If Half Life 3 will ever be released, it is never going to live up to the insane amount of hype that it is getting throughout the years. Many people who are hyping up the game fail to understand this.

What if we're all playing HL3 right now and the game is so good, so detailed and so immersive we can't tell that our lives are all simulated?

I never really understood the popularity of Portal.

HL was one of the first huge world 3D story based FPS games with puzzles and modding which was immersive and not just a rather simple almost 2D like looking indoor turn left/right shooter, there was some interaction, sometimes multiple paths in a level to advance, puzzles to solve and overcome, stuff to discover not just to kill and from day 0 you've had an editor to make your own maps and mods, day 0, right on the CD. Before that you've had Quake, Doom, Wolf, Hexen, Blood, Duke, Turok, ... all of which were built on previous tech and mostly were pure shooters and nothing much more, regarded in their own way but the FPS games can cleanly be differentiated as before and after Half Life. They look very different visually due to tech, although HL is a moded Quake engine it looks miles differently, and the way devs started to approach games to be not just run/turn/shoot although that disease has returned a decade later again with more and more tunnel scripted games like new CoD and the like.
On top of that it had a multiplayer that could be played slow without energy weapons or very fast with them. It was fun and long to play singleplayer and multiplayer. Of course very soon you've had Counter-Strike mod which was free but not at first as popular as the HL multiplayer or Q3A, so before all this CS crap with shady kiddies selling skins on gambling sites and monetizing the whole game started, you've had had good old hard core gamers playing CS for free using what ever mods and skins they wanted and made themselves for free while these shady kiddies were still in their nappies and not ruining the game.

Will there ever be HL3? Who knows, it all depends on the Valve owners probably and whether they or someone else pitches them a decent enough story to green light the project. Which is unlike say CoD or Battlefield or what ever shooter which gets an automatic remake every 1-2 years so they can milk more money from yet another crap game.

I'm all for waiting until graphics and such catch up... give us another game like Half Life 2 where the graphics and such still looked good 10 years later. Maybe the next one will be a graphical and performance beast and who knows maybe VR supported as well. I can't imagine how fun (and scary) smacking headcrabs with a crowbar in VR would be.

It's all fun and games until they jump on your head. I can see the YouTube videos of people screaming already.
