Limit by IMC or motherboard ?

Hi. I have some issue when trying to OC G.skill Trident Z 3600Mhz CL17-18-18-36.
My CPU is i5-6500 (stock for now) and motherboard is ASUS Z170-A. I know that my mb officially support up to 3466Mhz memory but I see someone running memory at 3866Mhz stable with this mb.

Here is a proof. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?292443-Skylake-6600k-amp-Asus-Z170-A-Outstanding-24-7-performace/page2

So I try 3866Mhz as well. Raising memory voltage to 1.45-1.5V , VCCSA to 1.15-1.3V VCCIO to 1.15-1.3V with various combination of timing but no luck. It never boot at 3866 and QLED sometime pop-up at CPU sometime not showing at all.

Then I try 3733Mhz and Raising voltage like 3866 but it has strange issue. If I set both VCCIO and VCCSA 1.125V it will never boot. I have to set VCCSA to 1.25V and VCCIO to 1.15V sometime it will boot sometime will not. And when I try listen music it will produce noise like a cheap mobile phone try to listen music. I solve this problem by reduce VCCSA and VCCIO to 1.125V in AI Suite 3.

So I back into BIOS and set VCCIO and VCCSA to 1.125V again but this time I set VCCIO boot voltage to 1.15V and VCCSA boot voltage to 1.25V. Chance to boot in to windows is greater but sometime it still not boot (if it can't boot QLED will not pop-up at anything).

My RAM pass Hyper PI 32M at CL15-15-15-28-2T with tighten sub timing as well with VCCIO and VCCSA at just 1.125V. But the issue is sometime it can boot while sometime can't despite passing Hyper PI 32M easily. So is it IMC to blame or Motherboard ?

Here is my setting.

That's way higher than either the chip or motherboard supports and it's higher than the ram supports too. Doubt it will work without insane tuning

Thanks for answer. I see my RAM can run 3866Mhz 1.45V stable on high end M/B like Asrock Z170 OC Formula. But I don't sure about IMC and my M/B. It is still decent in term of CPU overclocking (5Ghz 1.49V Prime 95 stable). But I want more about memory overclocking.

It's most likely going to take a lot of careful tuning and a lucky kit of memory to get that high.

I've bought 2 identical kits of memory and one will overclock 15-20% and the other one won't even run at stock rated speed. That's why they call it the silicon lottery.

The person that was able to hit 3866 either got really lucky or they went through several sets to find one that was good enough.

The processor is only rated for 2133 so almost doubling that is quite a stretch

Thanks again. +Rep to you.

I try playing with BCLK. Maximum is 3824Mhz (not stable). I can't go any further. Try Increase memory voltage / IO / SA / loosening timing but nothing help.

Actually I can't complain about motherboard since it rate for 3466Mhz and this is entry level Z170 motherboard. biggrin.gif
