I don't have much to say about the 1060 board because I'm not an engineer but leaks suggest it's faster then the 480 and slightly more expensive. Cool. If the 1060 comes out and starts blowing up inside of PC's I'll be interested but I doubt that'll be the case. I'd imagine it's a pretty decent overclocker in the same vein as the 1070/80 as well. We'll know soon enough.

They can't fix hardware with software, just like AMD can't improve single-threaded performance. Well, they can, to some degree, but not really.

That's true, but they also haven't designed an arch around it yet either. I'm sure that Volta will be designed to take full advantage of DX12 and that's when Nvidia will start to push it harder. Whether or not there will be more widespread adoption of DX12 before that happens is another question entirely and dependent on how effective AMD's console-monopoly strategy ends up being for them.

Also, I'd argue that any AMD card under the Fury X / 980 Ti / Titan X bracket was highly competitive versus Nvidia's offerings, even under DX11. I'll agree completely that in terms of top-end performance Nvidia's had the undisputed champ.

I've seen some leaks putting the 1060 on equal footing with the 480 and some putting it slightly ahead. We'll know a lot more once we have official numbers plus custom 480's by comparison. I definitely don't think it will be as interesting a proposition as the 1070 or the 1080, just going by recent history. Nvidia's strategy for a while now has been to take the top-end performance crown, use that to magnify their brand, and then sell *60's to people who think that it will be better than its AMD counterpart by association. When you're able to do that you don't really have to design super-great low-end / mainstream cards.

We'll certainly see. The Dx12 world isn't here yet and Nvidia have just now released their first real Dx12 cards. Considering how dominating they've been in performance and stability and for how long I'm willing to bet their driver team puts some serious optimizations in over the next few years.

But we'll see. I remember being told that Bulldozer was going to be faster then Sandy Bridge in most applications by now because of Dx11 multi-threading improvements. And I'm not just making that up that used to be a major discussion/argument on OCN in 2011/12.

Which "real Dx12 cards" are you referring to?
Nvidia's Pascal arch better be well equipped to handle DX12 as they're stuck with it until 2018 now. Early evidence suggests that AMD have an advantage.

In any case, the idea that NV haven't really software optimised their cards for DX12 yet is a little fanciful. I'd imagine that was one of the focuses of their driver team with the 1000-series launch.
