[Fudzilla]Kaby Lake conjures up two overclocking tricks - Page 2

Tricks? More like CPU features that can only be exploited by those who will pay an extra for an unlocked CPU and unavailable to be exploited by anyone who doesn't.

is it still 4c/8t for 7 generations in the row, for the mainstream platform, for even higher price?

I'm a sucker for adjustable parameters, an adjustable voltage/frequency curve sounds amazing. I hope this will be as good as it sounds. Guess I'll be waiting for Kaby Lake after all!

The ASUS thermal control tool does just that

I might finally go to something other than MX-4.... I still have no idea what platform I will be going with, since I'm waiting on Pascal Titan after the underwhelming 6950X launch it might end up being KL unless Zen really impresses. So any info out about how high BCLK OCing will go on KL? All the way up to 220 I hope.... being a fan of the older stuff like X58.

The same chip design are going into laptop and AIOs(in vastly larger quantity than the K SKUs sold to BYO users) and none of those need more than 4c/8t, so there is no need for Intel to add cores. Instead all those chip are fabbed and manufactured in the same production process and Quad core Ks are just chips too leaky to be shipped as 35/45W laptop or 65W AIO parts, they even kept the useless for gamer IGP as a result.

Until Zen proves it is a worthy competitor, Intel have no incentive to innovate in the desktop CPU space and have no pressure to lower price either. Remember when Bulldozer failed and Intel jacked up Sandy Bridge prices? That's where all this started.

I just wonder if this means we will be able to see a 4.5 pre boost stock CPUs with most getting easy 5ghz and the good ones reach close to 6ghz.
That will be awesome and finally a reason to upgrade my CPU.

Cant some Skylake boards already hit that? I know many advertised 300+. I think I ran my Extreme 7+ board around 200. The things you have to watch for when doing it are adjusting your fclk down, change your divider to 2x from the default 4x, and just give the bclk a bit more voltage

This means zen is going to be a bad overclocker. redface.gif
