Rx 480 custom cooling discussion

Hey all! I've seen several posts of a few of you utilizing aftermarket cooling for your cards and it would be nice to centralize all of our info for others looking into similar solutions for their reference cards.

I'm using the Arctic Accelero Mono Plus for my card:









The Cooler bracket almost fits with the stock heatsink plate sans the areas in red:



Current settings:


Max OC: 1370/2250 (only stable during benchmark run)

Max Temp readings during Fire Strike Stability test: (note errors were from 2250mhz test run, 2200 is stable with no errors)


Best Fire Strike run vs. Best Fire Strike run pre cooler:




Max Temp differences (unfortunately I didn't get a screenshot of 3dmark stress test before I swapped coolers):
Stock blower @ max OC(1360/2250): gpu 76c/vrm 98c/max fan

Mono Plus @ max OC(1370/2250): gpu 56c/vrm 74c/1500 rpm

Total Difference: gpu 20c/vrm 24c


Also, I'm pretty confident I can reach 1400mhz with some increase in voltage. Hopefully Afterburner or some other tool will be available to us in the future.


I'll add more info and tests as I do them. I'm interested to see all of your mods/results as well.

Well done, i originally intended to buy the Mono Plus, but since the Accelero Twin Turbo III was just 5€ more expensive i got this one instead.

Some pictures:



Unfortunately my CPU heatsink is rather large, so i couldn't use the backplate and had to cut the accelero heatsink threads as well:







One problem i'm currently facing is that my VRM cooling solution is rather insufficient, i won't recommend to use the aluminium retail frame (or even cut it apart tongue.gif).

Looks fine to me, but more importantly it keeps the VRM on a decent temperature so it's a good solution.

Yeah, I rarely look inside my case. Looks mean little when performance and such is involved.

Do you think if you added a 1mm copper shim to the gpu die would allow you to clear the interfering areas of the stock plate?

I wonder if Arctic Cooling would sell these brackets on their own. Im going to shoot them an email. I have two twin turbo 2s not being used currently.

Im going to cool all my 480s with a really cheap $4 aluminum blocks that look like this

Tried it on a 9500 GT yesterday but my 9.5mm tubing was too loose on 8mm barbs, and it leaked all over the place as soon as I powered on.

Going to get some 8mm tubes, and screws.

I might sell my 290 EK FC and use windforce for my 290s to cut costs.

Seems like the thermal adhesive couldn't withstand the thermal discharge, great rolleyes.gif

drill through all of them and use a long bolt. thats how gigabyte assembled the fins on the windforce.
