Huh. Why is mine so high in idle? Is it because I have two monitors?

EDIT:

Welp. Just tried running my system on only one monitor. Core clock went down and so did idle temps. It is now idling at 38c with the idle clocks at 215MHz.

Wow. Who knew powering a second monitor would need that much power? I'm sticking with a single monitor setup from now on.

Sounds like a great opportunity to start planning a custom water cooling loop. I would never let temps deprive me of my toys.

Huh. I didn't even know you could custom loop water cooling onto a GPU. I thought it was for CPU's only.

In any case, it's fine. my second monitor is just some cheap generic one that I got from a friend for free so I'm not really bothered that I don't get to use it anymore so I feel I don't need that water cooling just so I can use it (I just researched about it too and it looks complicated!). Instead I will start saving up for a nice 1440p monitor. Hopefully powering that won't put as much strain on my GPU as much as 2 1080p's.

A gpu can idle at 90c and last 10 years.


Most of the time it the fact of going from 30c to 80 up and down that do more damage. Like die cracking.. Solder failing..

People being mining on r9 290x at probably 90c + without issue wheee.gif Vrm failure is more common than die failing


The issue is when you increase voltage you increase current with increase in temp the electromigration start going worse.

What about idle 40c to 62c up and down? Is that bad?

If you want to risk that go ahead. Most gpu's will throttle before 90c and what does throttling mean? Correct, it means it's in the danger zone. Most regular users don't have disposable cash to just go out and buy a new gpu because theyre too lazy to cool it properly.

So, I'm the type that turns the GPU blower fan to max just before starting to play and set it back to default RPM after finished playing. Room Temp 36C something, idle around 46 C, and around 60C in load with full RPM. Its that fine? It rarely goes higher than 60C unless the game has lots of particles and lighting effects (which I usually turns off)

Do you mean idle at 40C with no fan and then rising to 62C under load with fan? If so that is fine.

My 980ti idles ~30C and quickly rises to 60-65C and standard fan profile keeps it in that range. Benchmarking will push it ~79C where again standard fan profile keeps it albeit the fan can be quite loud.

My understanding is this is due to elevated idle clock speed of GPU and apparently some users have been able improve this by getting both monitors on the same connection type e.g. 2x DVI or 2x DP.
