could a benchmark software damage a gpu?

Thread Starter
okay so i was using passmark to benchmark my gigabyte g1 gtx 1080, when the 3d benchmark part started i heard some crazy low pitch noise coming out of my PC something like coil whine but im not sure its indeed coil whine, this worries me and else is that the test was pumping more than 2500FPS, could this damage my GPU? im afraid it did and even if it didnt im afraid to do the test again!

i think i read somewhere that a gpu might damage itself if it was allowed to pump crazy amounts of fps like it did now, 2500FPS!!

more info: my psu is corsair ax1500i and mb is asus rampage v extreme, my system is 100% stable (5930k@4.4ghz).

GPU's often make that noise when the FPS goes crazy like you mentioned. I don't think it causes any damage to the card, although I'm not 100% sure.

oh god please dont tell me its damaged, rma from the store i got it from is a headache!!! it might take weeks to get approved mad.gif

alright, how can i be sure its not damaged? or if it is indeed damaged how can i prove it so that i might fasten the rma process!

every card squeaks at that fps.
does it show any signs of instability ? if not then it's not damaged.
Pretty sure 2500 fps is impossible so that was obviously a glitch. Benchmarks are meant to push components to thier extremes and that sounds like exactly what happened here. So before the freak out rma fest begins take a deep breath and back up and play your favorite game for a couple of hours.

Did anything unusual happen in that couple of hours of gaming?

Dude, no stress totally normal for a card to whine when pushing absurdly high frames.

As mentioned above only get worried if instabilities rear their ugly heads from potential damage, the chances of which are very low. thumb.gif

Yep, as unsettling as it can be it's totally normal. As long as temperatures are under control you aren't going to break anything. Those super old school 3d benches in passmark run stupidly high fps on modern stuff since they are simple, so the GPU is really cranking out the frames rather than crunching on each one for however many uS like when gaming. I probably wouldn't recommend doing it 24/7 but it ain't gonna hurt anything using it normally.

Another reason why vsync is so important in games that your rig can handle easily, you don't want to be pushing 1200 more renders a second in portal 2 than you can actually see lol
