Storage Solution and HDDs

Thread Starter
This is going to be a little rough as I can't seem to come up with the best wording.

This applies to storage solutions (NAS/SAN).

Would you rather leave your HDDs spinning all the time or have them shut off during idle time? I have a NAS on the network but I notice it spins up the drives when a new device turns on and goes to log into the NAS though not accessing any files. I am wondering if I should just have the drives spin 24/7 instead of turning on and off, say 10 times a day.

(a few WD Red 4TB if anyone is wondering)

Drive parking and starting does considerable damage to drives if these drives are accessed multiple times a day and then idle. If they are rarely accessed then letting them go into idle mode is fine but if you constantly wake them it will reduce their lifespan and accessing the NAS is enough to wake them. While you might not access any files accessing the NAS itself is enough as the NAS gets ready to be used.
