Did GPU thermal pads short my R9 290x?

Thread Starter
So yesterday I had some graphical glitches show up in a game, which fixed itself by restarting the game. Today I had a couple GPU driver crashes while watching some youtube. Didn't think much of it, left my machine on and went out for supper. When I came back the monitor wouldn't come out of sleep. Rebooting I had a vertical white bar (about an inch wide) on my screen during post and the Win10 loading screen. After loading the screen would just go blank so I guessed it might have been a driver issue. Booted into safe mode and the white bar was still there. The AMD drivers were somehow corrupted as AMD install manager had errors detecting and wouldn't remove them. DDU worked, rebooted, white bar still there but at least I got to the start screen in normal mode. Tried to install AMD drivers, screen went blank during the display driver part and didn't come back. So out came the card, in went my old 7770, no more bar and clean driver install. Took apart the R9 290x to see this:

Its an oily substance, doesn't appear to be evaporating, and definitely came from the blue thermal pads on my PCS+ R9 290x. Is it possible it could have shorted something? I'll clean it tomorrow and try the card again, but figured I'd post the pics now and see if it's happened to anyone else before.

*edit* I'll have to pick up new thermal pads first before I try the card again XD

The surface is always oily underneath a thermal pad. I doubt the pad did its since you literally lay them over a strip of VRMs. That transistor probably just popped on you. I remember opening and installing a few of those PowerColor 290's (not the PCS+ version) when I worked at Micro Center, and they looked like a fire waiting to happen. I doubt it's anything you did either, just bad luck. I had my reference 290X do something similar a few months back.

Ahh, well either way my poor 290x frown.gif Not a good time to lose it as the current gpu prices are just dumb right now in Canada. Time to see how long I can put up with a 7770 driving 2560x1440 XD

Hey if you don't mind second hand 290s, I have a pair that's retiring soon. Have waterblocks too. Can take off waterblocks and put on Windforce cooler for cheaper.

I have a pair of 4GB RX 480 coming Wednesday and I'm going to do the 8GB upgrade as soon as I get them biggrin.gif

I still need to get some M2 3mm screws for the Windforce cooler 'cause the previous owner threw them away :/

Tempting, but I think I'm gonna try to hold off. A whole new rig might be in order once Zen and KL release.

*Edit* Annnnnnnd I just found my receipt for it. Purchased July 13, 2014 so hopefully 2 year warranty will cover it.

Lol, trying a sweet scented email to their support first XD

If honey don't work, fire and pitchforks are next tongue.gif

*Edit* Just to add. They emailed me the following day to have them enter the RMA information manually. So here's hoping there are no issues with the RMA redface.gif
