isn't that the point of new cards though?

If the new card isn't better than the previous offering in either raw power, various efficiency or price performance ratio, it should be considered a failure.

The 290x continued to get driver optimization, after the 780 ti stopped getting it. There's plenty of videos on YT that test old & new drivers with kepler cards, disproving the "gimp"

Yeah? Even if that's true now (Games like Proyect Cars and other Gameworks games where even a 960 competes against a 780Ti suggest it isn't) how long before the 780Ti join the Fermi Family on this?

That looks like hardcore gimping to me.

i picked up a gtx 980 for 350AUD last week second hand (same price as rx480 here in aus). If i were you just keep an eye out for a cheap 970 or 980 if your not in a rush. I have had 5 second hand cards and never had an issue. just make sure you see it running before you purchase it.

I don't even plan to game and I will be picking this card up. For the cost I don't think it can beat.

could you post some of those benchmarks where the RX480 is *significantly* faster than the 390 at 1080p? last I checked it was below 390 or very close in a lot of circumstances, in others more around 970 level.

And remember, that's the reference 480 which is throttling a bit even @1080p.

I think he asked for significant. That kind of difference there is negligible.

To a certain extent, I agree.

But, the 480 is in the same price range/tier of 960, 280x, 380 but is beating the cards 1 tier above it, the 970, 290/x, 390 are all $300+ cards.
