Get the RX 480, no doubt. 290X uses too many watts and 780 Ti lacks VRAM - If you want Nvidia, you should rather get the 970 or 1060.
They are pretty even performancewise. RX 480 will probably take the lead over time.

RX 480 all the way, the R9 290X might be slightly faster on 1440p (Thanks to better DX11 performance the RX 480 is faster at 1080p) but AMD have a tremendous track record of improving new architectures performance over time, just look at the HD 7970 which was SLOWER than a GTX 680 in some instances and now even faster than a 780Ti in modern games like Star Wars Battlefront, Battlefield 4, the witcher ETC...

I'm sure that over time a RX 480 will grow to Fury Non X performance and way above/slightly below 980Ti performance.

7970 is not 6 years, it came out in 2012. And the 7970 is not much faster than 680, the 7970 GHz Edition is.
7970 is definitely slower than 780 Ti in 99.9% of games Lmao.. Those gaming you are talking about:

780 Ti performs like a 290X. Way ahead of a 7970..
Don't believe everything you read. Kepler is not gimped, but Maxwell recieved optimization first, that's why some day one benchmarks showed Kepler far behind Maxwell.

780 Ti performs pretty much on par with 970, in some titles the 780 Ti wins.

If I were to talk you out, I'd say "360 and walk away".

E: Can you wait for Vega? There might be pleasant surprises (but, of course, it will be a while until it happens).

IMO the biggest argument against the RX480 would be to wait & consider the GTX 1060.

GTX 570 is also one tier above it.

Gotta remember man, time is also one of the more important factors.

The 970 is what, more than 18 months old now? Personally, I am kind of disappointed for RX 480 the way it compares to 970 just because of the time factor.

I myself am just waiting for the custom cards from like Asus or MSI, hoping that the 4GB version dont go over $250 (if there would be such a version at all). Otherwise, it is just a cheaper 970.

Then, the whole situation becomes kind of like "I delayed my upgraded for 18 months to save 50 bucks".

I want my wait to be worthwhile is basically what I'm trying to say.

Well... This has been the case with many videocards. Take the 670 > 760, for example. Or the 680 > 770. Or the 7970 > 280X.
It has to fit somewhere, but people got too hyped and felt disappointment afterwards.

Again you are correct, But the 1060(sub $300) is gonna perform similarly.
If it out performs the 980, then grrreat!

My point is, the disappointment is that amd didn't release a $350 card that is close to the 980ti.

Edit: I completely agree about the time thing, that is my point that AMD is late.

This^, the 480 replaces the 380. same tier as the 960.

There is nothing above it from AMD for now, that is kinda disappointing.

I understood people hyped RX 480 to the sky, but I wasn't among them. I personally was hoping that it would stand between 970 and 980, leaning more towards 980, maybe 3-5% below it. Reality isn't SO far away performance wise, but taking into account that the reference card also has power and heat issues, it really isn't all that attractive to me.

my 570 had been half dead for like 1.5 years now, and I've set my eyes on the 970 ever since. After hearing about Pascal, I look forward to seeing 1070 while my 570 is on life support. 1070's prices killed the dream, and RX 480 also isn't as good as I myself predicted. I guess it's because I set my eyes on 970 for so long before that the fact that RX 480 stay so close to 970 just bugs me.

Again, if RX 480 (4G) from Asus Strix / MSI twin frozr could be had at $250 with improvements in power and heat, etc, I think I'm still in.
