Boot Loader

Hey all I have a question about boot loaders for a dual boot system. I'm wanting to dual boot ubuntu and windows however might question is can I load a boot loader to a usb flash drive independently from an OS? I don't know if this would be a good thing or not. I just don't like having a boot loader tied to a OS. Thanks

I'm no expert and have no idea about the usb option but I have stuck the boot loader in its own partition once.So if I wanted to reload the os it was not touched.

check out gummiboot, there's an ubuntu package so it should be easy to get set up for UEFI boot

Gummiboot can only load other boot loaders that are on the same EFI partition. It can't load things from an EFI partition on another drive.

There's an UEFI boot manager named "rEFInd" that can do it, I think, can deal with several drives that each have their own OS and EFI partition.

I don't really get why you want to do this. Windows boot loader I thought is always tied to the OS. Otherwise you should just be able to install grub wherever, you'll most likely have to change/update it manually or set up the OS to do it. Adding the new kernel for Linux after each update would get annoying fast.

The biggest reason for wanting to do this is so every time I load a new distro to a disk it dosen't re write the boot loader. Right now I have a test install of ubuntu that is on one disk holding the boot loader to my other ubuntu and windows machines since it was the last OS that was installed. Maybe I'm not installing linux correctly.

Super Grub2 Disk is probably what you are looking for. It can detect all OS's installed on the machine.

If you reserve one whole drive for each OS you try, you can do it like this (this is what I do, use one drive for the Linux for my normal work, then one drive for experiments like trying Windows 10, etc.):

You can disable individual SATA ports in the BIOS menu of your motherboard. You can use that to basically "disconnect" all drives except for the one where you want to try an OS. The installer of the OS will then only see that single drive and can't touch the boot loader on the other drive.

After you are done installing, you can enable all SATA ports and switch between the different OS through the boot menu of the motherboard's BIOS, using the hotkey it has to pull up that menu.

This could be a good plan, so one more followup question. What happens if I forget the hit the boot disk bios hotkey? Will it boot to the last drive that was booted ?
