1080 gained a whooping 2.8% from async in AotS, and sadly this is with me cherry picking the best case scenario.

1080 is 13.5% faster than Fury X in AotS, but that's like saying 680 runs circles around 6970, which really isn't saying much.

AotS is such an AMD biased title I'm not surprised.

But the reason why 1080 gains such small percent is because it's already well utilized.

But really we should start asking these developers why they say they are working with Nvidia on async when they aren't (I guess)?

It's not AMD biased, it's using a DX12 standard feature called Asynchronous Compute. Perhaps you should ask Nvidia why they didn't have the foresight to be able to use it.

Lot's of developers work with both AMD and Nvidia, but you already know AMD stands to benefit much more because of GCN.

What happens if Nvidia actually does release an async driver that increases performance drastically??

I would love that, just to see the look on everyone's face. biggrin.giftongue.gif

To put that in perspective, Fury X also "only" gained around 10% with async compute across all resolutions, so it's not as if they're deliberately hindering nvidia's performance.

The better question would be, why do people even hold out hope for async with nvidia? Maxwell gained nothing from async compute, and Pascal had trivial gains with async compute, partly because it's already well utilized. Given nVidia's OpenGL results in DOOM, why is there an expectation that once async is enabled for nVidia under Vulkan they'd also suddenly start seeing 10%+ improvements?

I really want to know that too, since according to many devs on b3d they don't really have hardware for it. means they won't gain any performance at all. that's why nvidia is so silent on that issue. even Tom peterson said no comments when he was asked by pcper.

The 1080 doesn't even execute all the terrain shaders with async, so it gaining 2% is meaningless.

That's an obvious answer isn't it? PR.. As you and others like to point out, Nvidia has a huge marketshare advantage, you think it would be better for them to say "Maxwell/Pascal is utterly incapable of async"?

Nearly been a year that we've been waiting to see Maxwell's Async driver, at this point it's clearly all PR hogwash.

You'll get that update with the fermi dx12 driver.

It's telling that it's been about a year since DX12's been out, in that time Nvidia's been "promising" an AC update, and 3dmark continues to stonewall their release, which is normally in lock-step with a new DX launch.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but they're certainly making it easy.

They can't, there won't be an update. Nvidia's current architecture does not support it Async Compute.
