Standard changes with each card. I would call "standard" what the reference design for each model has. In the case of the RX 480, that is a 6 phase design. But phase count doesnt mean it is better or worse. On this card most (all?) 8 phase designs will be worse off than the stock 6 phase design. That is because the voltage controller the GPU uses can only handle 6 phases, so to get more the manufacturer will have to use doublers on some of the phases. This beings max amperage gains, but you lose advanced features like precision load balancing. Many times the higher phase counts also use smaller and cheaper parts too in order to squeeze more phases on the card and so each phase is actually lower rated than what the stock setup would be anyway.

19% faster with a 5% overclock?

Power limit is probably different. Stock 480 is pretty power limited.

Weird at first glance but I suspect that the reference 480 is throttling due to thermals. I don't think the reference card can hold the stock clock speeds, so with an improved cooling solution, performance goes up.

Or ASUS marketing is being very generous with their numbers

I will probably end up with that ROG 480. Better than reference cooling, 8 pin power and 6 phases all from the power connector for the core, a better design that reference. My only question is how well the specs of the combined DrMOS compare to the reference mosfets.

Seems to be a cherry picked result, but hey it's marketing so it's as expected. Can the stock cards throttling be fixed with an increase in power limit? Or is it power limit + cooling limited for 1266mhz? Looking forward to see the limits with these AIB's. Obviously they are keeping them clocked low as to not blow out the power consumption too much and also to keep them from throttling with whatever power limit they have set it at, but I have to imagine end users will be able to push them to 1400+ quite easily just with improved cooling and higher power limit. I wonder if stock AIB power limit is 225w on all these cards considering all AIB's are going for 8 pin. They have that luxury to avoid throttling with the 8 pin rather than 6 pin.

My main beef with the ROG 480 is it is just too big for a mid-range card, I can't stand all these massive cards these days. I think the Sapphire is ~245mm which is spot on for this kind of card.

It's both. Mine at 1328 mhz needs the power slider maxed and the fan at an annoying 3500 rpm just to maintain it's speed. Temps between 88-92c. Yuck!

To fix this issue you need dismantle fan and put 2-3 drops of machine oil on fan bearing, assemble fan again spin it by finger few times , check for oil leaks remove it.... end thumb.gif
