Greetings from older geek, new overclocker

Thread Starter
I've been around computers approximately since the Dead Sea first began feeling ill -- my first machine was an Apple II with 48K of RAM and a 1 MHz 8-bit CPU -- and have done most computer jobs at one time or another, but mostly technical writing. I've also built various systems, though I have mechanical skills not far above the average turnip -- the weirdest was turning a stack of cheap surplus HP pizza box work stations into a parallel machine.

I've never overclocked anything; it always seemed too risky & too fiddly. However it looks like it may be time to do that when I build my next system, or rather get my favorite local PC shop to build me one. Some Skylake chips can be overclocked without voiding the warranty & there are lots of high-end coolers & ... I'm here to learn the details.

Unlike many here, I'm almost entirely a Linux user & not much of a gamer. My goal is a blazing fast workstation (4K, at least 60 Hz) for general office stuff, using the open source Linux video drivers. I do do some gaming and part of it is 3D graphics intensive, but I can live with 1920x1080 for that.
