for the most part, the lower capacity cards have less profit margins than the high capacity cards.

Sure, but you are also putting forth specs that make no sense. 48 ROPS does not fit with a 320b memory bus, at least not without a power hungry crossbar.

you have a point, they could differentiate an SKU with a crossbar, or it could be rebalanced to 40ROPs 320bit, or 48ROPs 384bit.

its an interesting issue though, are they truly stuck with 8 or 16ROPs per 64bit bus?

They should increase DCC efficiency more and increase rops to 64 and stick to 256bit, like nvidia.

Nvidia's ROPs are built different, they can tolerate low bandwidth levels.
AMD's ROPs are a lot more bandwidth hungry than Nvidia's for some reason.

with 64ROPs on a 256bit bus, unless its GDDR5X, the 64ROPs will starve and would barely perform better than 32ROPs.

That's why i said they need to increase DCC efficiency. and i have read somewhere that amd's rops are more efficient and stronger than nvidia's. that's why furyx can deliver pretty much same performance on 4k as tx, which has 50% more rops. they just require more bandwidth and that can be achieved by more efficient memory controller + better DCC algorithms.

How would the 470 compare to SLI 570s? Ignore drivers and lack of SLI support, I don't have problems with either of those.

Is it a significant upgrade?

670 was almost equal to 470sli, 570s are a bit better so add 20% max. that gives you around 770/7970's performance, rx470 is ~20% more than 280x which is a bit better than 7970. so probably 30-35% more performance compared to 570sli, even more on dx12. and better texture quality thanks to more vram.
I would say it will be a noticeable upgrade.

efficient in what? it is known that AMD's ROPs are stronger than Nvidia's, but at the cost of severe bandwidth dependency.
DCC isn't truly a solution to this problem, workloads aren't 100% compressible, its even severe when a large incompressible chunk suddenly chokes the narrow bus.
