But that does not mean that all of the light does. Just try it by shining a flash light at a mirror at an angle. Just because you are not directly within the beam's trajectory, doesn't mean you can't see the light bouncing (the light still travels from the point of impact, to your eyes, regardless of your viewing angle)

It doesn't matter as much what the light source is, and more what the surface is. Surface reflections are defined by what is called a bi-directional reflection distribution function. This describes the proportion of light sent in each angle in a hemisphere around a flat object with a particular surface finish. If the surface is a polished mirror, you get specular reflection - the kind they teach you about in basic physics classes, angle of incidence equals angle of reflection. White paint though, is a particularly good diffuse reflector, and you will get a much wider angular spread. To demostrate this, take a laser pointer and point it at a piece of paper. You can see the spot easily, no matter where you put your head, and it will always appear about the same apparent brightness.

The lasers used by autopilot systems aren't visible, but they behave much the same way as visible lasers do. Something like the painted side of a truck should have been able to be seen by a lidar system.

The solution is simple.

All this bad publicity could be easily avoided if they CHANGED THE NAME.

Then, there would be zero confusion, zero false advertising claims, and zero angry drivers.

But bizarrely, they straight up refuse to do it.

rename it to "if you don't watch the road while this is on or u will die and we will not be at fault"

Maybe people should read the manual? And, you know, use it as intended.

I have a nice frying pan, it does fry things well. But when I hit people with it, people get hurt. Why did they design it with such a feature? rolleyes.gif

So ugh, use things as they are intended?

frickfrock, I'm not clear why you are so upset about this. They're way safer, even misused, than normal driving.

He actually thinks if they called it something else like Driving assistant that suddenly people would change the way they drive with autopilot, that the guy who died would have been looking at the road rather than being distracted.

You can't fix stupid.

The fact that they advertised and called this feature autopilot is what is going to win the lawsuits for anyone that ends up suing over these collisions (assuming Tesla won't settle). Autopilot has historically, always been a device, that replaces a person at the wheel. Whether that wheel is on a boat, car, airplane, or spaceship the meaning remains the same. No human input is necessary while on autopilot. Now you can post all you want about increased safety, idiot users, and RTFM arguments, but that is the bottom line. They called it autopilot and car manufacturer's are liable for their products.

Population reduction phase, overpopulation detected.

All these accidents are 100% driver fault. Doesn't matter what gadgets they turn on they themselves should be in control of the vehicle and be able to stop at any time. Problem is the lazy Americans think all roads are straight and that new fancy line assist won't put them into a ditch while they nod off between coffee stops. Instead of giving tickets and fees like they do with people who use mobile phones they should outright put these sleepers using wanna be autopilot right to jail for a week to rethink what they are doing.

A new proposed name for that wannabe pilot from Tesla: "Suicide drive", "Carmagedon X", ...
