I saw that a new driver was released...so I broke out the card again. I ran a few benchmarks using Wattman and the new MSI Afterburner Beta.

I just made a few runs of Firestrike, and I get some odd scores.

Here is a screen shot:

The first 4 runs are at the stock settings with just the power raised to the max(+50). The last two are with the core OC'd to 1300. My score and graphics both take a big hit.

Any reason as to why?

The first one at 1300 was ran using Wattman. The second at 1300 was via AB.

Strange....to me anyway.

EDIT: Used the same settings...took the memory to 1850....lower than the last one by a little:

The 4xx likes to throttle you gotta see what your real clocks are stock and when OCed not just what you setup but what the actual clocks are when running the benches, games, etc.

---

I did write to the shop with reasonably priced 480 Nitros today again but no reply yet. Plus I'm liking the 1060 so far, it's not quiet as hoped and it may be a bit case intake air sensitive but other than that it runs like crazy and power consumed reported in HWiNFO is 100-120W... I don't think I will be swapping to AMD 4xx as long as the 1060 is trouble free or it's just minor stuff I can live with.

It's running at the stated clocks. 1270 stable on stock +50 pwr. It doesn't matter if I use Wattman or Afterburner. Same with the memory.

I just tried 1330/1750 via Wattman, instacrash.....graphical errors all over and Wattman crashes.

I use AB to upped the voltage only.....set everything else via Wattman 1330/1750. Score dropped like 200 points. Graphics also went down.

Odd to say the least. The card is not throttling...at all. It hits and stays at whatever I have it set to.

Use 1300 on the core and don't change the memory clocks. I'm guessing you're seeing negative scaling on the memory because AMD has yet to fix the memory clocks bug in the beta drivers.

Sadly, the last good driver, 16.7.2, doesn't support RX 470.

I'm using the 16.8.3 drivers from a dirty install over the 16.7.3 and I can change the memory clocks

I can hit 1330/1850 and not lose anything. I do have to use Afterburner for voltage/power though. Wattman doesn't allow enough voltage.

Here are the screen shots:

This is with my CPU@4.5ghz and the memory OC'd to 1866(1600 stock):

http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/10069079/fs/10069247

The card will run at 1330/2000, but as everyone has said, the memory bug is still present.

Just my opinion here....but Wattman is junk. It crashes way too much. Thankfully, Afterburner now supports these cards.

If you OC and are getting consistently noticeable lower average FPS then yes something is throttling on the card or if you are OCing memory the memory errors are eating the performance away.

No throttling...no errors. If I go above 1850 on the Vram, then yes, I start to lose score/fps/etc. As for memory errors....I've yet to see a single one on HWiNFO64, no matter what my settings are.

The ram I was OC'ing in the high score above was my system ram....not Vram.

I'm actually quite happy with the 1330/1850 scores. I've ran it a few times and it produces about the same score/fps. The cpu score will always differ in Firestrike, so I don't really pay it much attention.

I'm not new to OC'ing...just new to OC'ing AMD cards. lol biggrin.gif

Anyway.....the card is back away. lol Guess I'll break it out with the next new driver.

Here is the spreadsheet I started for 16.8.2. I've updated it to include the new driver.

You say that... and some actually do... but it seems most people don't realize that they actually aren't seeing the benefits from the higher memory clocks.

The easiest way to check if the memory clocks are being set is if the screen flickers when you set the memory clocks alone. If so, they're being set. If not, then set the maximum memory frequency with HWInfo open to the sensor window while watching "GPU Memory Errors." If the count doesn't skyrocket, then your clocks aren't actually being set.

Every program will tell you they are, but they aren't.

I get a ton of memory errors at 1850Mhz and some at 1840Mhz, no one at 1830Mhz. So that's how I know that the meory is being set correctly. I don't know if going from 1750 to 1830Mhz imrpoves performance, but, at 1440p and seeing how memory starved Polaris is, I assume that. I just put the drivers, overclock, and then start to use the card biggrin.gif

Memory over clocks get negative scaling on 16.8 drivers. Leave memory at stock for now. I assume timings are getting wrecked pretty bad by the driver for some reason, therefore you are not actually getting any extra bandwidth.
