I did not know your configuration and my request was initially addressed to another person that had 480@1400 which would've been more fair comparison, but since he did no deliver, I was curious if there will be any response at all.

You can get OC to OC numbers, sure. I have nothing to grain from comparing the results, other than knowledge - same goes to everyone else in this thread. I can also bench GTAO, if any of you guys are interested.

Way to ignore my point that when I went out of my way to give you numbers, I gave you stock numbers. So everyone could gain knowledge coming back with stock to stock and then doing oc to oc would be the way to go. You want numbers on the ONLY dx12 game where the 1060 beats the rx480 and then don't turn off your oc for an apples to apples comparison. That's not advancing science that's making you feel better. From my perspective it doesn't advance my knowledge about the 1060 at all it only advances my knowledge about your oc. Which is really a nice oc. My 24/7 is 1435 on my water card. In timespy it compares favorably to the 1060 at your oc clockspeed. Might be about the same or a little faster or a little slower. The 1060 seems really dependent on it's memory oc in that bench and I'm not sure of scaling. The rx480 is memory starved too and scales well with memory overclocks. So that would be a fair comparison. You'd still win in this game as I said. Not sure why you doubled down on calling me delusional. I"m just saying comparing stock to your oc only lets me know about your performance not about the 1060 vs 480 in general... the information that would help others.

I'm sorry if you took offense to saying you were bragging. None was intended. I think in doubling down on calling me delusional, you did intend offense.

edit: You could have at a bare minimum provided both stock and oc numbers to advance knowledge if that indeed was your goal. It really isn't going that far out of your way considering you were asking someone else to go out of their way.

@neptunex

Ran RotTR under the settings you listed previously:

Settings (Click to show)
Settings (Click to show)

All stock runs were done at all stock settings on my Sapphire Reference RX 480: 1266/2000 0% power and no voltage.

All OC runs were done at 1400/2250 with 50% power target and +24mV with Sapphire Trixx.

Z97 Gigabyte Gaming mATX - 4790k @ 4.6GHz - 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 2133MHz @ 1.5V - Windows 10 Pro - 16.7.3 Crimson Drivers

DX11 Stock Settings: 64.18 FPS

DX12 Stock Settings: 69.06 FPS

Gain from DX12: 7.6%

DX11 OC Settings: 71.45 FPS

Gain from OC: 11.3%

DX12 OC Settings: 76.94 FPS

Gain from OC: 11.4%

If you compare DX11 Stock 64.18 FPS to DX12 OC 76.94 FPS you end up with a gain of 19.9%

As mentioned previously I was going to alter Tesselation and PureHair settings... I triple checked these scores and got within 0.5 FPS across all runs.

First I turned Tesselation OFF...which had a decent impact on performance:

Tesselation ON, PureHair Very High: 76.94 FPS

Tesselation OFF, PureHair Very High: 83.34 FPS

Gain 8.3%

Next I turned Tesselation ON, and reduced PureHair to 'ON' setting and there is a very small loss in performance

Tesselation ON, PureHair On: 76.43 FPS

Gain:  -0.7%

Then turn PureHair OFF and there is a small boost:

Tesselation ON, PureHair OFF: 79.38FPS

Gain: 3.2%

And lastly Tesselation OFF and PureHair OFF:

Tesselation OFF, PureHair OFF: 84.16 FPS
Gain: 9.4%

When it comes to Rise of the Tomb Raider and the RX480 apparently:

  • DX12 is a decent 7% performance boost, and when coupled with an overclock can show large gains.
  • Disabling Tesselation will also give a decent 8% performance boost.
  • Reducing PureHair from Very High to 'On' showed a marginal 0.7% loss in performance
    • Disabling PureHair is good for a small 3% boost
  • Disabling both Tesselation (8.3%) & PureHair (3.2%) doesn't add their performance benefits together
    • This equals a 9.4% boost which is only 1% greater than just disabling Tesselation.

Just curious as to why you chose Motion Blur as the only setting to disable? I initially messed up and ran all of these different scenarios with Motion Blur on, and found it to be a 5% performance hit on average.

It is considered 'fair' for benchmarking with Tesselation disabled as AMD cards take a good performance hit from it.  If we use that same logic in this scenario then my 83 FPS is right there with your 84 FPS.  Essentially a tie, unless your card was running at stock settings to achieve that benchmark score. as I see you have a healthy OC on your 1060.

Hey guys I'm interested in purchasing a RX 470 4GB but I need help deciding which is the best option. The MSI Gaming X looks rather tempting what do you guys think?

This is true, but I did list my PC specs in the post.  One could potentially argue that AMD enthusiasts that frequent this site are likely familiar with some of the basic improvements of new APIs like DX12, Vulkan, and Mantle.  Better leveraging multiple CPU core/threads to improve weaker CPU performance is one of the major things that AMD has been touting since Mantle.

It also depends heavily on how the game is programmed.  I experience those kinds of gains, 30%, in AoTS with my other PC that is running a 4770K and R9 290.  What was also interesting in AoTS was when comparing the gains from the same overclock in DX11 and DX12.  DX12 showed a larger boost in performance from the same OC, which is not the case here in RotTR.

I am pleased to see my overclocked 480 trading blows with an overclocked 1060 though.

MSI's Twin Frozr coolers are typically top notch performers in all respects.  If I were purchasing an RX470 it would likely be between MSI and XFX Black Edition...probably leaning more toward the XFX due it having a backplate for only $20 more and I have had great luck with XFX products in the past.

Thank for the feedback, I've heard a lot of negative things about XFX in terms of reliability although I've never had 1st hand experience with their products before.

Thanks for delivering @Roboyto. Try to upgrade drivers up to 16.9.1 and see if your score changes, as for my settings I just hate Motion Blur, in fact I don't know if I did bench with it off or on (since I've actually adjusted it after playing the game), I'll look into it if it has any performance impact.

As for other adjustments, I am not a fan of disabling tessellation and other nifty things as we can argue about it forever, I just boot the game and play. But screw the arguments, I am mainly curious to see if you will get good gain from updating the drivers (if doesn't go against your religion that is).

I purchased a pair of XFX R9 290's shortly after they released.  Still running one of them that is a beast of an AMD Hawaii card clocking at 1300/1700.  The other card I sold to a co-worker and it is still running AFAIK.  Purchased a used XFX 290 from the marketplace here, ran it for a year or so, and sold it to buy my 480.  I Have purchased several low-end XFX cards to put in family/friends PCs for connectivity purposes with no issues so far.

XFX won't void your warranty for removing the factory cooler even though the card will probably have tamper stickers on the screws.  Their warranty policy is different for North America compared to other markets.  I'm unsure of MSI's stance on this.

The only negative I can speak of XFX from personal experience was a Fury X I recently bought from NewEgg.  It had artifacting issues out of the box, which when I tried OCing the HBM showed that the HBM was definitely the problem.  NewEgg exchanged it for me and the replacement runs just fine.  I already replaced the stock watercooler with an EK block and it is waiting to be dropped into my main rig and replace my awesome 290.

I have never owned an MSI GPU for any extended period of time, so I can't speak from personal experience in that regard.

I won't rebench to the extent I just did, but I'll run with my OC on DX12 with/without Tesselation.  There's nothing in the patch notes for 16.9.1 regarding RotTR so I would be surprised if there was a benefit; I checked before running all my tests.  AMD usually tells you if there is a measurable performance gain.
