Can anyone explain these systematic bumps in frequency of core and mem?

Getting a solid 24.8 to 25 MH/sec in ETH mining on average on my 480, at 1316 MHz core/2025 MHz memory, or default clocks. This was less than my Nano, which was 26.5 MH/sec at 940 MHz core/500 MHz memory.

I'm gonna leave my 480 at stock... which is the above quoted clocks for my model. It runs at 60C flat, which I like. My 290X and 7970s had to run fans full throttle to keep from overheating, and that was 85C. So I want another 480.

Since the internet where my main desktop is slow, I'll just run 3DMark later.

Ok, my 10% wattman overclock for the XFX 470 4GB cannot survive the VSR 1440p test, only stock core can survive that. Sure, its already factory overclocked, but still...

Oh well, back to custom ultra on 1080p.

I haven't had SSAA2x on recently, but before I did all the benching to compare to neptune I had all settings maxed except tesselation where I never noticed any issues.  I have not actually played the game since updating to 16.9.1, but given that there are problems in the benchmark (scene 2) with my otherwise rock solid overclock, I will likely be rolling back to 16.7.3

If you could look at the benchmark with hbao+ dx12 and SSAA2x the corruption should show up toward the end of scene1 and follow into scene 2. It's harder to see in scene3. It's a lighter color square in the bottom left of the scene with a digital looking checkerboard pattern coming out of it here and there. If you don't have that corruption, even if your board has s3 bugs I'm going to buy one.

I read online that many owners of your motherboard get crashes coming back from s3 sleep. I can live with that more than I can live with my video cards not working properly.

edit: everything else in our systems are almost identical.

edit2: 16.7.3 is the only driver I never tried. It limited the memory oc for a lot of people. On ssaa4x the corruption is a little more prevalent and shows up even in the menu. This has been on every driver version, 2 video cards and 2 motherboards. I can't test this problem on my other computer as it wont run this game in dx12 but the corruption in t-rex and justcause3 don't occur on the other computer. So I know it's not the cards or something inherent in the driver. Also, AMD says there isn't a known problem with these settings and they can't recreate the problem. So it's probably my choice of motherboard. That's all that's left. If you can verify that the corruption doesn't occur, I'd be very grateful.

I should have some time to check it out tonight after I swap my new Fury X into my other system.

Win10 has inherent issues with the computer staying asleep...if it was crashing after resuming from sleep it would be doing it frequently and I would have noticed it by now.

Is this corruption a driver problem, or a specific RX480 problem, or AMD in general problem? I could test it on my other machine with the 290 in it, and then again once the Fury X takes its place.

The corruption only occurs with my rx480 in my system with an as-rock z97 extreme6. In my other computer the corruption doesn't occur with the same rx480. I don't have any other current amd cards to check. The next newest AMD card I have to check is a 6870. Not really worth checking as it can't run the latest drivers anyway. In dx11 hbao+ fxaa I get hard to notice digital noise around the edge of water in geothermal valley. In DX12 HBAO+ FXAA I get flashing textures and lights here and there in Geothermal Valley plus the same noise around water. This is in gameplay not the bench. The easiest to test for corruption is the SSAA2x/4x habao+ dx12 corruption in the bench. It doesn't happen on the computer upstairs with the same video card and driver version. The image issues are more annoying in Just Cause 3 as they interfere with interface elements of the map in gameplay. That's solid colored blocks overlaying interface elements on the map during the opening tutorial and over the justcause 3 logo in the opening credits. T-Rex in CompuBench has weird noise in the foliage that looks terrible. It doesn't occur on the same video card in another computer. So again, just looking for something to swap out that will solve the issue. I'm about 90% sure at this point that there is a compatibility problem with the As-rock extreme 6 and the rx480 that's a little subtle but noticeable in some games. At least the problem has persisted across 2 as-rock z97 extreme6 boards and 2 reference rx480 cards and after a system reload. The other 10% is that there's a problem with the cpu or ram that doesn't show up any other place or in any diagnostic or stress testing. Most everything else has been ruled out other than an unlikely compatibility problem with the Samsung 840 EVO. There's a high enough chance that it's the motherboard that buying another one is a logical step if your's works fine. GecKoTDF has the same corruption with SSAA4x hbao+ and dx12 in ROTR so maybe he has the same motherboard or another board with a similar problem. I also found one other user on the AMD forum with the same issue. I don't know what motherboard either person has, but I'd place a small wager at this point that they are AS-Rock boards.

edit: I guess I shouldn't do text walls. Just the rx480 test in your z97 system. Thanks.

Just break it up a little bit.  All that text with very specific details can be hard to follow.

On the ASRock MoBo front, I can attest to PCIe issues with boards that I have had.  Z87  Z77 Extreme 6, Z77e-ITX, and an AMD Board (can't remember which one but it was AM3+).  All of those had a PCIe failure at least once, the ITX board had PCIe problems 2 times.

I usually don't come home for my lunch break, but I did today, so I will quickly run the RotTR bench and see if I can duplicate what you're talking about.

I definitely see what you're talking about when SSAA and HBAO+ are enabled.  Dropping down to SMAA, or just reducing HBAO+ to 'ON' removes this problem.

I also tested on my R9 290 and the same issue is there, but it is nowhere near as noticeable as the 480.  Where the 480 has a whole rectangle down in the lower left corner of the screen, my 290 displays an issue that only goes diagonally through that rectangular area.

You don't happen to have Just Cause 3 do you?

+rep btw.
