I just purchased a Reference Asus RX480. It's going to replace my current R9-290 since it seems to have died. In the process of RMA for that card now (again sigh), but went ahead and bought the RX-480 figured it would get here much quicker. I have games to review, test, and play so a solution is needed quickly.

Not sure If I will keep the RX-480, since I'm pretty sure my R9-290 underwater will best the rx-480. I plan to find out for sure though before deciding which card to keep. May even buy a waterblock for the RX-480 which is why I picked up a reference card.

I'm not very happy that my other card died again, and in short notice. Pushing 4k isn't easy, and I would like a faster card, but paying 600$ for a 1080 aka a midsize die gpu is a hard sell. I wanted to hold my cards till Vega, or 1080ti. Oh well maybe rx480 crossfire watercooled in my future, *shutters* crossfire. Eh rolleyes.gif

You would be surprised depending on how well your 290 clocks.  I already pitted the two against each other in Time Spy a little ways back:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1605802/official-radeon-rx480-470-460-owners-club/40_20#post_25355009

Stock ~vs~ Stock the 480 should be a good margin faster on most accounts.  Not that Time Spy is the definitive answer for performance overall indefinitely, but it can still paint a pretty good picture.  If you have a good clocking 290, then it will catch up and probably surpass the 480 pending settings on both cards; but it won't murder it in performance overall.

Time Spy was as far as I went unfortunately since I removed the 290 and put a Fury X is in its place.

There have been a couple people who have posted Xfire benches, even someone who came from a 1080 who showed the 480s besting it by a good margin.

Well it's a bit tall

The difference between a normal cooler and my prototype or the prototype of Awesomeguy10578 we don't have the 4 pillars of the holes - So we can adjust a side more than other, in conclusion the big surface of the water block, can touch some components in some place, you are not going to see any difference in GPU temps because its OK in the middle and works fine, but can be a little crooked.-
That happend to me, because the GPU, the sparkly part its probably 0.02mm more higher than the little components near by - I put the insulate tape and was almost flat, so any minimal difference in the straight of the water pump can do a mess.-
That happend to me with the second video card, reboots, power draw issues, under-voltage, noise in the pump like a HDD working, etc - Was that electrical problem, I know this can happend 1 in 100 cards, but can happend.-

I'm waiting for the game to be out for a month or so and get it after some bugs have been fixed and the servers are calmed down, hopefully for a discount (same thing I did with FO4 and Doom, minus the servers part) so I won't be able to use your code, but rep and thanks given for being a good guy! well my r9-290 ran at 1165mhz core/1500mhz mem stock voltage under water. At those speeds it was scoring well over 14k gpu graphics score in firestrike p, basically in line with stock 980's and fury (non x).

I had a xfx rx480 reference 480 for a bit for a review, and it was slower than the r9-290. Not by much but was slower overall. Granted the 290 had a waterblock on it, and the rx-480 was reference blower.

I wanted to avoid having to buy a mid-grade card to keep me going until something that can push 4k well which is currently the titan xp, and I don't exactly want to pay that price. Hey nvidia this is your que to send me a review copy :-D. I just wanted to ride my hawaii heat wave into the future of Vega and Volta before dropping cash on a replacement card.

But hey at least it's not worse than this, so one last time, the Powercolor 480 sucks and here you go again why it is so:

Here is the rest of 480s:

Yeah the Red Devil is bad frown.gif feelsbadman

Though buildzoid explained again in a followup video it would still be more than enough for water/air overclocks up to 1.3v ish in theory or at least if you keep the VRM cool.

Is there a reason I can't find a Sapphire Nitro+ 470 8Gb teardown?? I understand it's very similar to the 480, but aren't there still going to be hardware differences?

Does the 8gb 470 still have the samsung chips? I can confirm it's clocked at 2000mhz however.
