Pretty much.

The RX 470 reference is gimped HARD in the BIOS.

The default core TDP limit is 85w... 85! I had to bump the PowerTune settings to 120w with a short burst limit of 150w to eliminate ALL throttling at 1266. OOTB it was throttling to 900-1000mhz in Valley from 1216.

Ill get the Arctic models that are recommended. The ones with the backplate heatsink are preferred...

And back, yeah the TwinTurbo III is it. You can go larger if you want with the Extreme IV. Be warned however, its HUGE.

470 is gimped in BIOS, true, it's good that it can be easily fixed in Wattman smile.gif Configured properly, it can reach very close to stock 480 4Gb, even without massive OCing. Why 1266 though?

With WattMan you can only hit ~120w, which is good for around 1300. For anything above that I was using VRM hacks, and now I just mod the BIOS.

Above 1266 the worse than reference RX 480 cooler becomes much louder.

Eventually Ill put an Arctic Accelero TT 3 or Ex 4 on it and bump it up to ~1400.

When I bought it I decided to not even attempt to OC on the reference cooler, I just set it to stay at 1216 and I'm happy with it so far, for anything above and beyond, I'll get some Accelero on first.

Yeah, I kinda wanted to know whether or not the card was going to be worth putting a nice cooler on. I hit 1400/1925 on the stock HSF, was hanging with OC'd RX 480s in Valley scores. It wont stress test for long at those speeds with 1.2v on the stock HSF (thermals), but it plays FO4 for hours with zero problems except for the awful racket of the fan at 100%.

I'd say that is fairly good and worth a cooling upgrade eventually.

The real question for me is whether the Twin Turbo III manages to keep the card significantly cooler and pretty much silent? If yes, I'll place an order right away. Overclocking is a secondary issue, what I need now is a stable and silent 1,266MHz..

Yes. At max fan speed it will be like the ref cooler at idle, maybe a little louder. The fans top out at 2000 RPM AFAIK.

You may want to hack up the ref cooler to get the VRM heatsink off of it. Make sure you keep a few mounting points attached to the heatsink section so you can attach it to the board.

It requires a hackjob? :/ I'll just try upping my fan profile to 2400-3200 tonight and see if I can live with it.. If not, I'll grab one. Would a Twin Turbo II fit on the card easier?

You can go without hacking stuff up, but you will get better VRM temps if you put something directly on the VRMs. The TT 3 cools them from the back of the board, which is fine for reference RX 480s (you can run them totally bare, people have done that with water cooling setups). The temps on them will just be a bit high.

If I can install without hacking it apart then it's ordered. It was 50% off so there's that. I can probably keep using it for future cards anyway.

EDIT: Would I need VRM and RAM heatsinks as well? I don't think it can be fit while retaining the heat plate?

EDIT 2: Oh, it has a backplate for cooling RAM and VRM, cool. Ordered.
